Fuel Tank Vent

The other day I filled my truck up at night when it was about 70 degrees out. Yesterday it heated up just above the century mark. I removed my fuel cap from the tank and air pressure came out followed by fuel spewing out at me. Can any one tell me if the fuel tank vents should work both ways or is there a check valve on them just to prevent a vacuum in the tank? Its a M925 truck.
