Gen 1 and Heater

I have Gen1 issues. The light isn't coming on at start up, and I am only getting 12.4V with the engine running.
I have done the following.

  • Rebuilt Gen 1
  • Replaced Exciter plug
  • Clean dash connection
  • Replaced bulb with 168
  • Replaced heater switch.
  • Checked heater fuse.

From my research I have learned that the Gen 1 exciter wire and heater blower are on the same circuit Post; http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showth...-1-light-problems&highlight=gen1+not+charging

I am no auto electrical expert but I feel this is connected to the heater.

I recently had to repair the heater core. It was clogged and leaking. After reading a post recently from CycleJay on heater issues.

My plans are as followed;

  • Replace Motor (Currently one going bad)
  • Motor resistor (bad shape and new one on order
  • Clean plugs
  • bypass motor noise suppressor if needed.

Am I missing anything? I am looking for suggestions. Any advice would be helpful.

Thank You,

stationjj

Follow the Gen trouble shooting procedure in the TM. Are the correct voltages getting to the plug on the back of the alternator? Is the ground strap from the alternator to the engine good? Is the ground strap from the engine to the buss bar good?

Perhaps take the alternator in to the auto parts place and have them test it. Rebuilt alts can fail just as well as an old one.
