VA General liability ins for HMMWV

Long story short my insurance company will insure every shade of wheeled and tracked unregistered vehicle on my farm under my general liability. Except for my M998. Heads exploding. We need the 17 digit VIN. None. We need the registration. It's not registered and doesn't need to be registered in VA. They keep coming back with "get it registered and it will only cost you $1,900 a year!" I keep saying it's a farm vehicle.

Anyone have a similar experience or solution???

why insure it if it never leaves the farm? I had state farm and they would only do it under commercial liability for 700 bucks a year. I ended up getting full coverage for the same amount through Hagerty and no weird hopes to jump through.

The problem is that there are 3 state roads through my property and I cross or use the roads at times. It is not required to be registered (GVWR >7,500 lbs), but needs general liability per the new VA state laws if used on the road at all.

I really don't want to register it as a on-road passenger vehicle because of the ins requirement/cost/state inspection. But Travelers underwriting can't wrap their heads around it.

I also have a converted bird hunting truck with no vin based on a K10 pickup drivetrain. No doors, no windshield, no body, etc. They also don't know what to do with that. I may just risk it on that one. Don't drive the road much because it is no fun at all being pelted by gravel and dust.

I may try Hagerty next.

Well I tried Hagerty online. $407. So I called in. They said what do you use it for? I said towing a trailer, going to the co-op, parades, farm use, etc.

They said sorry, that doesn't fit the category of collectible, we can't help you.

What do you guys tell them???

I read my Hagerty policy the last time something like this came up. It clearly states that you can occasionally use the vehicle for its intended purpose. That is what I do.

Why are you not using the Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Company? The $40 per year membership fee is but "chump change" in the scheme of things. All my military vehicles are insured with them. I have a couple of dozen trucks with them. The Farm Use tags here are good for 7500 miles usage per truck per year. They are legal within 50 miles of any of my owned or leased properties or 50 miles from the last of any "string" of properties managed or controlled by me. I carry only liability insurance on each. I also am not required to hold a CDL to operate any of the vehicles. All the trucks cost under $275 each per year. I am a 20-plus year customer and I do not hold some sort of "fleet" discount. Any insured vehicle must gross over 7500 lbs.
Check out my operation here: Use Google to search, "Phillip Ramsey Military Beekeeper" YES, I AM a Beekeeper!!

I told them I use mine for leisure which seemed to be fine. Progressive is another company that covers them I believe which I currently switched all my other vehicles to but didn't look into changing the humvee.

How about a heads up next time Phil. If I drank coffee I would have spit it all over the place reading your last line. :)
(I've seen it 3 times and twice just last week.)

Steve, I have been doing this stuff for so many years now that I can't remember when I started or to whom I I have shared stuff in the past. The funniest part of the last line is due to the beekeeper reference. Much of my aviation experience remains shrouded in mystery due to the nature of the work. The recently released movie titled, "The Beekeeper" has caused many of my friends to say, "ahh, THAT kind of beekeeper." Of course, I have no connection whatsoever to the current Hollywood fantasy being streamed.
