Generator belts slipping and no room to adjust

I am sorry I do not have a photo for this yet but I will add one later, in short my belts started screaching on the way back from New Jersey with my dolly and trailer and when I checked the belt adjustment frame was all the way at the limit to adjust any further. What i did to fix it was to cut a piece of similar thickness steel and weld it to the end that bolts to the block and walla the thing worked perfect and it all took about 20 minutes to do. Just thought someone else might need this fix.

I run 1/2 shorter alternator belts but they can be a chore to install. Another aid in this fix is to move the primary filter mounting bracket from the top of the frame to the bottom. Buys you another nearly 1/2 of belt adjustment room.

Some general belt info that might be helpful...

Reguardless of sizes you have 3 general choices for auto V belts... I say "general" and "auto" loosely because there are a endless V belt list with different ratings...

Standard V, bottom cog and top cog ... life, longevity, or rating goes in the same order... Standard V is the lowest... Top cogged belts usually carry the highest ratings giving better mileage. Some come in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 1 inch lenght variations pending the manufacture so its possiable to find a 3/8 shorter belt in some cases giving a little more adjustment with a little easier install.

Easiest fix without replacing belts is to relocate the primary fuel filter bracket BELOW the upper frame rail. This will give you at least an additional 1/2" of adjustment. If this is not enough, try the belt replacements mentioned above.

Mine did this when they were getting worn out. Not all belts are created equal, including how easy to put on! Lemme go out in the cold and note the exact kind of belt I was easily able to install. BRR.. OK, :

My truck has the belts it came with from the government, they have NSN numbers on them. I have to have the alt. pushed all the way up to where it's touching the lower radiator hose just to slip them on and off. When tightened, there's still a few inches of adjustment room left...

I reilize that it may sound like a "doh" type thing, but I mean loosen the bottom bracket bolts, where it's attached to the engine. Loosen them as much as possible, take the bolts out and you can hang the pully on the belts and go from there.
