Grease type?

So what kind of grease do u guys use on your 5 tons?? I did a search n couldn't find much, and the TMs just issue a MIL number which I have no idea what type it is, just don't wanna mix as that can be bad which I'm sure most are aware. Do u guys use the same for bushings and ball joints as u do for u-joints??

Google the MIL spec for the grease type. You'll see lots of civy equivalents, many from your FLAPS. Happy greasing!

Also, check out the Lube Order (LO) and it will also answer your second question.

Saw it mentioned here How To Hub Flip that "Castrol Pyroplex Red" was what they were using on the axle bearings. Have not bought any yet, but need to get something for MIL-G-10924 since I'm swapping the hubs on my deuce back to normal this weekend. I'm usually pretty crafty with Googling, but I too am having trouble finding a civvy counterpart for listed for this.

Apparently also while searching here there was a member selling some GAA MIL-PRF-10924G but he is sold out now, but did post a link to an article regarding some up and coming biodegradable stuff.

This thread might help too, as it states on page 2 that "Mobile One Synthetic is an advanced lithium-complex thickened, multi-purpose NLGI Grade 2 grease. which meets and exceedes the Mil Spec"

Most modern name brand grease cartridges that say multi purpose can be used for front end, u joints, suspension, wheel bearings etc. Anything requiring greasing with a zerk fitting. These are used in fleets and major equipment so you only need one part that does everything. I personally like the "red" (not the grey/black old school) greases which are water resistant , high load, and universal in application. read the label, it says bearings, joints, bearings front end etc, I can't see why it would not work on our trucks regardless of the military spec. Lucas, Mobil, Valvoline all make this product and now there are also synthetics out there.

That brown/tan gunk the military uses sure looks nasty when it oozes out when fresh stuff is shot in. I suspect the military is slow to adapt to what the modern automotive aftermarket has available. The newest grease in the classifieds is a red product from what I remember in the ad.

I used the red stuff on all my fittings in the m923.:popcorn:

As juanprado has said, about any name brand tube grease will work fine. I personally use NAPA wheel bearing and chassis grease. Mainly just because I'm in NAPA several times a week and it's handy.

I like Napa premium in the blue and white tube or the large tub . When repacking wheel bearings they take a fair amount of lube . I want to always use the same grease on a bearing that I used the last time I had it apart . When I bought my m211 in the 1980's I bought wheel bearing grease in four small cans when using the grease I found the grease in two cans where blue and the other two cans the grease was gray the out side package's where the same .
What ever you use have a good supply.

During my time on my last submarine, we just switched over to "Mobile Red." It's really a good grease. Just as JuanPrado said, it works in **** near everything that has a zerk fitting. It's some awesome stuff!

Honestly, any good synthetic high-speed wheel bearing grease will work fine. Specs nowadays are far better than they were many years ago. The quality is high enough to take care of anything these old trucks can throw at it!

Got everything greased up but having trouble getting to the zerks on the propeller shaft between the transmission and transfer case. Do you guys usually just remove it to access those zerks on the u-joints? Thats a tight fit in there!

You should be able to get to them. If the shaft was assembled right, you will be able to turn it and all the fittings will face down at the same time. Put the trans and t-case both in neutral and you can spin the shaft by hand.

I've seen some grease gun ends (I don't know the proper term) that are bigger than others. You could have one of the bigger ones that won't let you get in there for the joints.

You can get a needle fitting for your grease gun that will get in there easier but you should be able to get on it with a standard flexible line. But if you have time take the shaft out, clean it and the caps completely of all old grease and reassemble with new grease and bolts with locktite it is cheep insurance. This is the weak link in the 939 series if you ask me and I know they are not pm'ed properly in service.

Talking about having the zerks in the right direction, Once a few years ago, I went under the 5 ton to grease her, and no lie, every zerk was in the perfect position, every one, I was amazed, Should have played the lottery that day :)
