The Guntruck​

She was a mighty lady, as she rolled along the road.She was never meek or timid as she hauled her deadly load.She lived just for the ambush, where she charged so bravely in.And stayed there to protect her flock, till the ambush found it’s end.She carried so much dignity, she was never meek or mild.The men that lived with her each day were creatures of the wild.Her life was filled with mayhem, a seductress for all to see.It was her only purpose, her only reason there to be.And when the action started, the kill zone was her home.And she lived there, Oh, so valiantly, till all her flock was gone.She lives now just in memory, with bravery and no shame.As she runs phantom roads of times long past…….​

And Guntruck is her name.

In about 22 days we can all sit around and hear some of the stories. I can't wait!! The CAMO Crew is gonna set up a "523rd Speed Shop" base of operations where we can cook/hang out.

As far as N0N-transportation go, we built our own gun trucks in the first part of 67, nothing fancy, just plated m51s (dumps) and a bunch of 60s, still better then nothing. This was the USAF engineers doing the build for construction site and convoy protection.

Mr. Rich Killbane published an excellent book on Guntrucks in Vietnam (he worked at Fort Eustis, now at Fort Lee) I recall him stating something close to this for an explanation (not a quote here) that the Vietnamese Commander would fly across the country pointing out his units trucks working in support of the US (by that, I mean every truck driving out there) or some such, so then US forces decided to paint their truck noses Yellow, Red, White, etc. based on which unit they were assigned from so they were distiguishable from those so called Vietnamese transport units. thus ending the bragging rights of the Vietnamese General when he tried that line again.

I was told by a certain party that they painted the yellow to allow a clear distinction from the air when they called in the air strikes to hot zones ?

Gathering is getting close, Aces & Eights is coming along good. New tires are on, turbo and timing , valve adjustment, new radiator, pyro, cab insulation, brakes and wheel bearings done. I still have more to do on her, but the hardest stuff is done now. We're leaving Ephratah on August 2nd, should be there by evening, August 5th. Looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting some new ones, JT

JT, glad you were able to get it all done. You must of really been busting your butt to get all that done in the last month. How does the truck run now with turbo on it now? Good luck with the trip.

Wow...the time is almost here and some Guntrucks are on the move or will be tomorrow.opcorn:

Murphy has made his first attack...on JT driving the Aces & Eights from New York. Blew a freeze plug outta the head in a most hard to access but he has a good repair plan so he should be good to go after a good night's rest.

One of my drivers brought Black Widow up from Florida today so we have her, Proud American, and Troy's new "Ugly Ranger" already here.
Ace of Spades, Psychotic Reaction, Aces & Eights, and Untouchable should be here by Monday sometime. That's seven Guntrucks!!

For any of you that are thinking about coming just to meet folks and see the trucks I think Friday the 8th of August is your best bet as there are no tours etc., scheduled and everyone will just be milling around the hotel area (see 1st post for address) and socializing.
Also, Saturday folks will be hanging out until they decide to leave with no particular schedule.

It's probably best if you just drive a POV due to limited display/parking areas for bigger stuff.

I'm really excited about seeing some of my friends/Guntruckers and have been talking to some of them and we have a plan to have a good time!!

OK, today was day zero of Gathering XII (12) which is just for folks to start showing up, meeting and greeting, signing in and signing up for different tours etc.
Tomorrow is the first actual day and we will roll out at 09:00hrs with five (5) Guntrucks and a convoy of POVs to tour the Confederate Naval Museum here in Columbus, Georgia and then on to a steak or catfish lunch at our VFW Post 665. After that it's on to look/shop at the Antique Mall near my compound and then back to the hotel for some more socializing.

I'll try to post some pics of the activities tomorrow night but for now this is about it:

Left the hotel this morning with police escort for 5 Guntrucks and a convoy of POVs headed to a tour of the Civil War Naval Museum and then a steak or catfish lunch at the VFW.

Oh...and since Tony was tied up today we had an excellent SS Member as driver for Proud American Guntruck...it is our own beloved Tinwoodsman from Texas.

A few more: The last pic is some of the Hotel Staff who wanted to ride in a Guntruck so Tinwoodsman, being the gentleman he is whistle gave them a high speed trip down the Interstate and back.
