I know how to tell the difference between the first original old I think they are 7 ton with the four pleats on the boot and the ten ton with multiple pleats without looking I'm thinking about 8 pleats on those. and then the 12.5 ton units which need the bigger gear is there a way to tell the 10 from the 12.5 from the outside? could you tell from the variant # 998 / 1097a2 / 1123 / ect...

They are mot 7, 8, and 12.5 ton. They are roughly 7,000#, 10,300#, and 12,100#. The 12k shaft joint do not look like the smaller obes. The tripot joints sre more triangular. .

thanks man I had said 7-10-12.5 I knew they were close , I need to find a pic of the triangle ones .never seen one got a picture? and I figured the 12 ton one was on the armored up trucks. I'm waiting on a 1097a2 that was not armored and wondered which ones that had? thanks

Quick eyeball will tell you if you have 7-ton (sorry Action, I couldn't resist), I mean 7k or 10k and that is to count the number of ribs in the boot. 3 ribs? 8K (technically 7.7k). 6-7 ribs 10k (or 12K - but that's unlikely unless you bought a 12K truck or swapped out the shafts - and if you did then you know what you have.

The inner joint of a 12K will have very pronounced flats that you won't see on 8K or 10k shafts.

wow everyone is so quick to correct me its like no one read my orig post that said I knew the difference between 7k and 10k by the number of pleats in the boot and that my question was can you tell the difference between the 10k and 12k from the outside IM SORRY I said ton instead of thousand my mistake. seems like you guys would rather beat me up instead of just a simple answer . like the 10k shafts are round on the joint on the diff side and the 12k ones are a triangle shape .short and sweet. I've been a ase certified mech for thirty plus years now and I'm no dumb a$$ . I didn't say anything about "the 12k shaft joint don't look like the smaller obes" or "they are mot 7,8,or 12.5 ton" I read between the lines. thanks anyway I got what I need to know. thank you greg as I was typing this you posted what I needed

I told you in the very first reply that the 12k are triangular. I also sent you a PM offering to take pics for you, but got no response.
