Head gasket. . Replacong the one on my m35 with the multifuel. I have been taking lots of photos as I go. I will upload them when finished. Also I talked to a mechanic at D and D equipment ( great place to go for repairs and modifications for your truck, located in Big Rapids, MI) and he will try to email me step by step instructions for head gasket replacement from a Hercules repair manual. When I get that, I will either try to upload it for all to see or will find a way for everybody to access it. So far I have spent about five to six hpur and I have the heads loosend but I need a couple tools to remove the exhast manifold and the he
ad bolts on the side by the fuel injector. I wish anybody who does it themselves the best of luck.

What I am interested in - and probably other newbies that have not done a head gasket job on a multi - are tips for what to do and what not to do and how to do it, from people that have done this job.

I would like this to turn into a walk-through for the head gasket job. Seeing that you clicked on this thread, it is likely that you either need this info or that you can contribute.

The TM for multi engine repair speaks to the teardown and re-assembly process. As I know from many other jobs, there are different ways for getting the work done right. If you work in an armed forces garage overhauling an engine, with access to whatever tools you need and ample time on your hands, it may be worthwhile to disassemble everything, as per TM. Experienced mechanics here on SS may be able to tell first timers, how to do a good job without getting themselves into a mess.

Some things I throw out there:

- removing valve train, yes or no? Can I leave the guts of the head intact?
- someone removed heads with manifolds, turbo etc. left attached. Advisable?
- details on block surface prepping; scotchbrite pads a no-no?
- when using m35-tom's new style head gaskets, is there any additional coating (Permatex; if so, which one?) advisable? All around or just certain areas?
- head bolt wrench; I saw many home-made ingenious solutions and a suggestion to use a 7/8 sensor socket.

I collected threads that contain some information, many are really useful, but none is "THE" authoritative thread on doing this job. My theory is that if there are so many threads on one subject, none of them has all the needed info!

I would go to SECO and get their set with the new style head gaskets. It is a complete engine gasket set, but it is worth it to have everything you need. I think they are around $280 ish. MAake sure you get the new style, modern style, 1 piece gaskets. No need to re torque, permaseal around coolant and oil passages.

The vast, vast majority of that kit is not going to be used for the head gasket job.

You'll only use:
Head gaskets (x2)
Road draft tube to valve cover gasket (x1)
Valve cover gaskets (x2)
Water manifold gaskets (x6)
Intake and exhaust manifold gasket (x1 I think)
Turbo to exhaust manifold gasket (x1)

You should also do all your freeze plugs in the heads.

If you're trying to make sure that the kit has all the gaskets needed for the job, none are missing, and you want to set them aside and have them ready before you start the job, just take a printout of the respective pages from the TM for head gasket replacement, along with the gasket kit, out to the truck with you. You can walk through the install pages, pulling and matching gaskets/shapes/sizes from the kit as you go. Like Clinto said, there's a whole bunch of gaskets in the kit you won't use for the job, and standing there looking at the engine it should be very obvious which gaskets are used for the heads, manifolds, and periphery. If the little crush washers that seal the injectors to the heads arent too badly battered, they can be re-used by annealing them... just heat them up to a medium cherry red with a torch, and let them air-cool, no need to quench them.
