Headlights seem to be oriented too low after TM.

After bumping around the sticks during deer season, I thought I'd check my headlamps on my M1009- one seemed higher than the other. Per the TM I measured the distance from flat surface to center of headlamp. It was 38". The TM says to mark the present middle of the beam (hi-beam ON) on the wall and subtracting 3" (38"-3"=35"), adjust beam to the lower spot on the wall. Now both beams look too low?

I have decent lamps (better than OEM), but they don't seem to illuminate much of a path.

Is there a better way to adjust the beam? A better bulb without running to bright for oncoming traffic?

My answer is Truck Lite LED. Direct fit for less then $400. I have them in 4 of my trucks and I love them. They are also easy on the eyes of on coming traffic. I had the H4 with the HID bulbs but they are obnoxious and I got a lot of number 1 hand ratings in parking lots on low beam. On high beam they melted the tail lamps on the vehicle in front of me. And they do not like water or the cold weather. LED work great under all conditions and I have stock wiring and never have any issues. LED NO heat and I still have no ice up conditions. HID hot and using a lot of amps. LED expensive but worth it.

When I picked up my M1009 from the auction, another buyer was picking up his. He said that he had bought several CUCVs over the years, and found that the military has the lights adjusted very low. At the time, I assumed he thought that due to broken up/down adjusters, which mine were broken. Now I'm wondering if there is any difference between the procedure in the TMs vs what a civi manual calls for. Anyone have a comparison?

They are the same as civilian headlamp adjusters. I used the same headlamp adjusters. Good old Hoppys and a long Philips screwdriver. Nothing special about the whole truck really when it comes to the service lamps.

My lamp adjusters would not stay in position due to metal fatigue so I cut out a few pieces of metal shaped like a triangle and welded in to reinforce. As far as adjusting a good dark area and adjust to where I want them.

I know the parts are the same... I am curious as to whether the TMs have different height measurements for the beam adjustment than a civi manual would. That was the intent of my question, as I'd heard, albeit from one questionable source, that the aim was adjusted lower for military use.


On a related note, the Help brand plastic/nylon adjuster "nuts" didn't last much longer than the time it took to install them...

WOW. That's a new one. Military Spec headlamp adjustments. Never heard that one before. And I get GM adjusters out of every vehicle I see at the YOUPULLIT. Astro vans have nice headlamp buckets as do the all the Chevy vans I work on. Many sources for the adjusters. But I never heard of Mil-Spec headlamp adjustment. Happy Holidays. I am fine with the standard adjustment.

He's not talking about what you adjust the headlights with, he's talking about whether or not the military point them somewhere lower, using the standard adjusting gear....
