Hemtt vs M923A2?

If it's for personal use or just cause I can have one, go as big and as jealous as you can make everyone. Or as most would point out, buy both. These things are still cheap and awesome. Collect them all.

If this is for an actual reason other than that, post some more of the situation, like "I want to haul xx tons" or I only have a place to store something x high...

2 different animals. HEMTT has a larger payload, is bigger, has a knuckle boom (M977/M985), more HP, more expensive, less MPG, expensive parts, and a somewhat lack of knowledge in the community compared to the 5 ton due to more 5 tons being released.

M939, has a removable top, shares more components then the HEMTT with the M series, a smaller truck (except for M927/M928), can carry 10 tons on road, vehicle specific parts are easy to find and often cheaper, shares and engine with the M809 series, seats 3, lots of knowledge about them, TMs are available anywhere, just to name a few.

Depends on what you are planning to do with it.

Just stick to a 5ton to start with. Cheaper and easier to work on. You can always go bigger. No sense in jumping off into something like a HEMTT when you have no idea about them. Which reminds me to keep trying to get a HEMTT part of the parts catalog going.

Offroading a HEMMT will be an expensive and labor intensive hobby.

These are not overgrown toys. They were built with specific missions in mind which did not include joyriding in the woods.

They ride like an oxcart, suck the bottom out of the fuel tank and are hard to manuver in the woods.

The only reason I would own one would be for a movie prop and the cool factor.

Your mileage and expenses may vary.

I've owned both, a couple of 5 tons, 800-series and 939-series, and currently own a HEMTT M977.I would not have purchased a HEMTT unless I had a very specific need for it, reaching difficult to access log buildings over unimproved, or at best, completely washed out "roads" and then unstacking them in a safe manner for later rebuild. A 5-ton wouldn't have cut it for this task, but the HEMTT comes with much higher maintenance costs, and repair bills when something needs replaced.

Basically, what do you need it for, and what are you willing to spend.

Best check with your State DMV, and your insurance agent so you will know what registration, etc is going to cost you. Every State, and Company are different.

I'm only pointing out costs the OP may not have thought of, not opening an insurance discussion.

If you're off roading/mudding buy 2 5's. You're going to need one to pull the other out. I'm not being a smartass either. These things get stuck easier than you'd think, and when they're stuck, they're stuck good. There's no such thing as a little stuck in a 22k lb truck.

Yeah I can see how it would be a pain. His best bet would probably be to get a truck with a winch, and make sure that he never goes anywhere offroad where there are no anchor points for the winch.
