So I'll ask again - when are you going shopping? Have you got any good sources yet?

I'm still in the learning stages at this point. Trying to figure out all the logics of owning
a 5 ton MV.

There is a good group of guys that belong to a club here in North Jersey. I just meet
another one when I went to the Armary near my house to check out the M939's. He offered a few places that could be of help in locating a 5 ton for me, but I think it might
be just a little premature at this point to go shopping. I just wanta make the right choices
so I don't get stuck with a truck that's just not gona work out.

This is all very new and I still have much to learn. I'm not in a rush to go buy the first thing
I see. I think taking my time making sure thing are right and finding the right truck for me.
I would feel more comfortable with out rushing into something.

It'll all work out, just takes time.....

Here's the run-down on the model numbers:

M923/A1/A2, Cargo Truck, WO/W (Dropside)
M925/A1/A2, Cargo Truck, W/W (Dropside)
M927/A1/A2, Cargo Truck, WO/W (XLWB)
M928/A1/A2, Cargo Truck, W/W (XLWB)
M929/A1/A2, Dump Truck, WO/W
M930/A1/A2, Dump Truck, W/W
M931/A1/A2, Tractor Truck, WO/W
M932/A1/A2, Tractor Truck, W/W
M934/A1/A2, Expansible Van, WO/W
M936/A1/A2, Medium Wrecker, W/W

A1 = 14.00x20 singles, NHC250 Cummins
A2 = singles with CTIS, 8.3 CTA Cummins

If you want a turn-key 939A2 truck with ABS you should be prepared to spend $25,000-35,000 depending on which model you want. There just aren't that many around.

I do have something like this in mind..........

M925/A1/A2, Cargo Truck, W/W (Dropside)

with a 8.3 CTA Cummins

and 14.00x20 singles

but the CTIS would be a nice option, but not a priority

would this be considered a A1 or A2........???? please explain......




I guess I meant to say I'm not really looking for a truck that needs a lot of
major work. (project truck)

I know that it'll need some type of work done to it but I'm not looking to get
in over my head with a truck that needs a ton of work done to it just to get
it road worthy. Does that make any sense...??...kinda hard to explain but
I guess saying "turn key and go" was a little over board.

Thanks, that sure helps clear things up......

with that in mind......

would it be safe to say that by a quick glance looking at the wheels that it would be
a good indication that it is a A1 or an A2....??

A glance at my post above would have answered your question:
A2 = singles with CTIS, 8.3 CTA Cummins
A2 wheels, see pic:

Of course that is not always a 100% rule as the CTIS wheel valves and shields may have been pulled off if the CTIS was disabled. You can also look at the shift tower in the cab to see if there is a CTIS controller bolted to it. The A2 axle drive flanges have an extra hole drilled in it to allow the air line to come through. There is also an extra air line running from the frame to the spindle on the A2's. The 939/939A1 will only have 2 lines coming from the frame for the air brakes. More pics below.

Don't discount the 939A1 trucks though. The NHC250 is a great engine. No CTIS is not always a bad thing. It can be a very time consuming and expensive system to maintain. You still get the 14R20 singles and maybe ABS if it got the MWO before being released. M939/A1 parts are a little easier to find and less expensive typically.

steelsoldier -- That was a fantastic explanation of the difference between the A1 and A2.
Thanks so much for posting up the pic of the CTIS system. I can see how
such a complex system (i.e. CTIS) could be trouble some if not working properly.


On a side note:

New Jersey DMV will not allow antique registration if the vehicle is less that 25 years old.
They will allow me to register it as a normal vehicle but with a Collector Decal that will exempt me from motor vehicle inspections. Just a yearly trip to the inspection for an odometer reading.

NJ DMV did say that transferring the title from a Gov. Form 97 was not a problem...
if that would be the case.

I haven't checked with any insurance companies for a limited use policy yet.
that's next on the list.

No problem. Man I wish we had a collector decal that would bypass the inspection. Of course with straight air and a 11-ton plus curb weight, an extra inspection is not always a bad thing. My truck plates were around $300 a year, ouch. Call Sonya at Gulfway insurance for an estimate at 727-863-5451 and tell them you found out about them on SS. It won't get you a discount, but it lets them know we're sending them business, so maybe some day... My 923A2 is around $325/year for full coverage.

I will definitely call Sonya at Gulfway insurance for an estimate tomorrow
and at least just touch base on the insurance side of things.

To bad I wouldn't be able to get the Antique Plates....I'm probably
be paying full reg. each year for a 20,000lb truck....oh well...

on the lighter side of things......Good News...

I spoke with a friend of mine that's on the council in town and he
informed me that there's no restriction on parking a MV in my
driveway... :D ...the only restriction are on Commercial Vehicles.....

It's been a good day full of good news about getting a M925.......SWEEE-----T

Welcome aboard C'dub. I'd make contact with Bruce Kubu and John Winslow as both may have an M925A2 for sale. That said, steelsoldiers advice is wise; M939A2 trucks' CTIS system is maintenance intensive and A2 parts are generally much more expensive and sometimes more difficult to obtain.

An ealier member's post was right on, this addiction is not as destructive as drugs, but just as expensive.

...another way to discern an M939A2 from the earlier trucks...the axles. The A2 axles are flat on the bottom of the differentials (i.e., they have different axles).

I don't believe I've had the chance to meet up with John though.

I do believe that finding an M925 A2 could be on the difficult
side...

I do have my hart set on at least an M925 A1 though...Something
about it just turns me inside out....must be those Super Singles
and winch combo...with that Massive 939 hood and grill....Wow....
That is the truck for me....!!

I'm sure the A1 would be the best choice, even for a starter
truck, I could be very challenging to own.

I was working on Rt. 78 near PA today and four Hemits
rolled down the road...a couple of 8 x 8's and some 10 x 10's...

I was like " Oh my GOD.........check dat out....Cooooool...."
