HMMWV Timing cover on a M1009?

Hey all,

Can the later timing cover from a HMMWV with the crank trigger pickup be used on a M1009? The only difference I think I see is that the later cover has the mounting boss/hole for the crankshaft pickup on the drivers side behind the timing indicator bracket. If one needed to replace ones cover could the new one be used and the hole for the crankshaft pickup be plugged adequately?

Thanks...

Is the HMMWV engine a 6.2L or a 6.5L? And if it is a 6.5L is it the older style GM or the newer GEP engine?

Well...I'm not sure...LOL. I have an opportunity to pick up a nice cover as a spare. One does not have the area for the crank trigger on it and I was told it's off a 6.2 HMMWV. The number cast on the front is 14024202, The other I'm told is off a 6.5L later HMMWV and the number on the front is 10154643.

I was told that a small plug like a rubber expansion plug can be put into the later cover to block the trigger hole.

you sure can, just have to make sure and use the later model timing set and lower damper so the spacing on the pullies stays the same. BTW I have an entire setup I need to sell.

Ok...now I'm really confused...LOL. I just picked up a new timing chain set from Cloyes and they don't list a different number for the set on say a '84 model versus a '90. It's the same part number.

Same for my Fluidampr...It fits 6.2/6.5 '82 thru '93. Is it a timing cover post 1993 needs the changed components?

Will the 14024202 casting numbered one work with the current set-up? It has no crankshaft trigger mounting boss on it...

The cover will work. The difference for the crank trigger is the damper and timing gear on crank. Gear when using crank trigger is wider which uses short snout damper.

Glad I stumbled on this post...but still need more educating.

I'm in a dilemma about which Fluidampr to utilize for my application.
I have a 2003 6.5 Optimizer reman long block. The 1st picture shows that I have a reluctor wheel for using a crank position sensor. Since my Suburban is a 1990 version, I believe it should be a mechanical setup for me - Yes or No?
Other questions:
1. Can I replace this cover for the 6.2 version cover (without CPS hole)?
2. If not, why not, and how should I plug that hole?

I already bought damper 800191 which comes with the spacer for a total length of 3.18". I placed it next to the OEM damper and determined it was too long with the spacer so I opted to install without the spacer. It hits the front cover before seating against the crank. So I ordered item 800141 which is shorter at 2.443" long.

I was confused in the marketing of these dampers as mechanical versus electronic. It is starting to make sense if a reluctor is installed, than the shorter damper is required.

Last question: in regards to my second picture, when installed correctly, will the end of the crankshaft sit flush with the damper???

Thanks for any help and clarification you may be able to share!

just order the crank sensor, put it in the hole and be done with it.

the crank doesn't need to sit flush. the lower pulley will sit over the top and cover the hole and the center bolt will hold the damper and pulley on. (keep it from walking off)

I wish it was that simple for me.
I just discovered the upper bolt holes in the cover are STRIPPED! Ugh...auaaua
Time wise...it may be easier, cheaper for me to just swap the covers.
