How I added reverse light switch for my HMMWV

I’ve mounted the reverse lights and was hoping I could find a reverse hot wire somewhere in the back like the trailer harness. Other than removing the gear selector to see if I even have one, can any body shed any light on this? Thanks in advance, Sham Note: Checked all of the trailer terminals already.

SWITCH LOCATED!

I found the switch on eBay that already has the 3/4-16 threads. It is a Massey Ferguson Starter Safety Switch Part Number 181140M94 for $11.04 shipped free. Problem solved with a huge victory for us all! The wiring terminals are different but the non-ambulance HMMWVs do not come with the reverse switch connectors anyway so you’ll terminate your own wires regardless. Diligence paid off for once. There's a switch that screws into the side of the shifter next to the neutral safety switch. You can find them on the evil auction site, several other places for around $40 to insane market pricing.

Make sure the one you get has the thread adapter on it.

Poke around the site, there's a thread about this from last month, i think.

Oh, and look into the parts manual for the part #. You'll have to build your own "harness" for the switch, it's not built into the truck's wiring (IIRC).

As far as I am aware , No.
I am in process of doing the same thing to my truck and after looking into it alittle more u have two choices.
1. Wire up the lights to a switch, and flip on when u are backing up
2. (better idea) Do what I did and source a switch from a Humvee ambulance as they had reverse lights. Simple two wire switch that bolts into the shifter.
When the gear selector is put into reverse the pin switch is activated and the reverse lights come on (like in any modern day car/ truck). I believe I saw someone in Ebay selling them as a complete kit
with lights and such.

Google is your friend when it comes to these trucks...

There is a reverse wire in the ambulances but not in the standard 998. I teed my backup light power off the lead that powers the shifter light figuring if I wanted to keep them from coming on I'd just leave the master light switch panel lamp switches off. I did replace both backup light lamps with LEDs and they draw so little power that either the Bright or Dim control gives you full brightness.

I guess I’ll add the “neutral w/adapter” reverse switch to the shifter box after all. That’s what I was trying to prevent. Prior to me starting this, can you tell me if the shifter will come through the top for access without disconnecting it from the tranny parts or do I start underneath disconnecting the linkages and then pull it out the top? The shifter disconnects from the linkages with a couple of cotter pins and the 2 leads from the neutral start switch, then lifts out the top. You shouldn't have to change any adjustments. I installed rivnuts in the floor panel and that turns this into a one man job.

Found one on eBay for under ten bucks brand new delivered without the adapter. I’ll find an adapter with the right threads next. The item number is deleted in case anybody else is wanting one as well. Do you, by any chance, know the thread sizes on the adapter? Thanks, Sham

Neutral switch to Reverse Switch Bushing Size

Can anybody tell me the thread sizes for this bushing? Are they MIP, NPT, Compression........or both? I have the neutral switch but Lowe’s Hardware was no help at all. Tx in advance.

I tried to go the neutral safety switch route because it was cheaper than the reverse switch but was not able to locate the double threaded adapter. I ended up buying the reverse switch. Out of curiosity, I took out the double threaded adapter from the reverse switch and went looking for it at all the hardware stores and searched online. Could not locate it. I still have the neutral safety switch in my garage.

I can't give you the size of the adapter because it is already in my HMMWV. It has been installed for over a year.

I’ve seen about 100 people ask this question with NO ANSWERS. I hope I don’t have a real problem with my Humvee! This mystical bushing is obviously too much for anybody to know the thread sizes. Thanks again

I have mine with an on-demand switch. It's a habit now of throwing it on when I backup, but it's super handy when someone behind me forgets to turn off their brights or being parked while messing with something behind the vehicle in the dark.

That was the easy route but I am trying to make it as “normal” as possible as there are already enough switches to play with simply for the lights but thank you.

OD 3/4 - 16 (the size of the hole in the shifter)

ID 9/16 - 18 (the thread size on the actual switch)

I had to make my own bushing using my lathe... it was a PIA even though I cnc'd it. I searched literally everywhere and nobody has a threaded adapter with those numbers. The only place I found was a company that made threaded bushings to custom order. I bought mine off fleabay which didn't come with the bushing and i didn't feel like paying 60 for another new switch with the included bushing. Although I did find a 24v switch for a tractor that was close, but the threads were not spot on. This bushing is mystical for sure... lol

After careful mic measuring and a TPI gauge, I got the same thing last night but, like you, failed to find the bushing anywhere. I do not have a Lathe, however, I will be using a 3/4” - 16 compression fitting and boring out the center and tapping it to a 9/16” - 18. I paid $9.95 for a brand new NSS and I also refuse to pay the extra $50 - $75 for a ten cent bushing. If we could only find who made these. Thank you for an accurate answer to my question. BTW, I got penalized by doghead for starting different threads for a conversation on the switch and then another conversation about the bushing. Though initially not related questions, he merged them and gave me a point. Thank you!
