How much play is acceptable in steering gear box.(M812)when the engine is running it's right there.when it is off there is there is 7-8"ofplay at the wheel.is this normal or worn out?can you adjust the worm gear to correct this?

are you sure the play is in the box ? i had some play on the 818 and ended up adjusting the drag link in small increments till it felt right. the imput shaft u joints on mine need to be replaced just havent taken the time to pull it apart and find the right ones.

The standard 800 series power steering has MUCH loose motion without hydraulic pressure. It is a zero feedback steering system, totally hydraulic, but with mechanical intervention for hydraulic failure. Very typical of industrial equipment and a trademark of the ROSS system. If it is spot on with the engine running, it is right, do NOT try to make it operate like a standard commercial power box or like the old ROSS HYDRAPOWER.

Hope this helps
