HUMMWV's

HMMWV's

Hello all,
Just joined the site, I'm an LEO (and retired military), our agency just received a HUMMWV from the LESO office. We received a 1995 M1025A2 slant back, it has 5100 miles and seems mechanically sound, an Army mechanic we had look at it after we got it said it had all the mods it's supposed to and PM seemed to be current. The only issues so far are the heater box cover and venting are missing, the heater works and we rigged a temp fix with some home heater ducting and PVC pipe (I know that will upset the purists), but we needed heat and defrost. We've already used the vehicle during the last snowfall. Also the transmission seems to be leak when it gets really cold, I've checked the levels per the -10 and it reads just short of full when at temp.

As with many here we are doing this on a shoestring budget, we do not have a 4x4 vehicle and it was relatively easy to convince the city council on a very rugged 4X4 vehicle at a very low cost (notice I didn't say free) . We plan on using the vehicle mainly for snow, flooding, post storm clean-up and other emergencies where a normal police vehicle would have trouble or be damaged during the response. Additionally because of the cargo capacity we are going to put our critical incident response equipment in it and use it as a response vehicle, and as a show piece for special events. The local vocational school is going to paint it (they and I are aware of the CARC issues), it won't be all glossy but a decent usable vehicle.

I've done some reading here before I joined, I've always been a MV enthusiast and there seems to be (among some here) a bit of hostility toward the LE community getting these vehicles. Most agencies are going to use them in roles similar to ours, it provides a capability at a relatively low cost, and that is a value for the taxpayer (remember we are tax payers too). I understand the frustration with the demil requirement of the HUMMWV fleet, hopefully that will change but who knows.
Anyone with suggestions or tips for the 1025A2 please respond to the thread or send me a message.
Cheers.......
;)

LESO, KASCAR, ect. depending on cost. If we have a major component failure and it's cost prohibitive to fix, we'll turn it back in. I've already replaced some lights and they were available at advanced auto.
We realize this can be a maintenance intensive vehicle, we will use it sparingly and for it's capabilities.

Make friends with the civilians where you picked up the HMMWV through the 1033 program. Our local one had 30 HMMWV's scheduled to be scraped and they let a few of the local police agencies come down and pick parts off them before they were sent out. Several agencies were able to get a good surplus of computers, flashers, gauges, winches & controls, injection pumps and any other parts we could load up to keep our vehicles up on maintenance. Plus it feels good to save what we can from going to the scrap pile. My agency is currently approved for an MRAP, were are just waiting for one that's not 1000+ miles away. I know a lot of folks are upset that an almost 1 Million dollar vehicle is being given away. But they have already been bought and taxpayers are not getting that money back, so I don't want it getting blown up on the bomb range. Most people are just upset that they can't get one for pennies on the dollar like the other trucks. Good luck and stay safe.
You realize this is totally illegal right?

My understanding is that the folks who went, had to sign itemized receipts for all parts that were taken so they could be tracked through the program. Sorry if I made it sound like a pick your own parts scrap yard.

Probably some envy but I hope no hostility. It's great that LEOs are getting these rather than scrap. I personally was first exposed to military vehicles by repairing M715's that belonged to our local SO. That was a long long time ago and has led to a lifelong enjoyable hobby/addiction.

That is not illegal if done through the LESO, parts are part of supply chain. We plan on getting a spare and using it for parts if needed, again it's all about keeping the capability for low cost.

Welcome to the site. Most of us here like stock but are realists and know that modifications are sometimes needed.

Did you read the HMMWV Checklist sticky?

Yes I printed it out, very helpful!
I like stock too, I plan on starting a Jeep project as soon as my wife says it's okay......;)......
Not meaning to insult anyone, and I agree the demil rule sucks for HUMMWV's but we might as well get as much use as possible for serviceable vehicles.
Hopefully Uncle Sugar changes the rules, but ya know how that can go.

Remember, slant back hmmwv's leak when raining, snow melting or even in sunshine (lol). So plan accordingly when placing items in the bed and or under the turret. Plastic tubs are best.

I have the cad drawing and measurements for a cover plate (thanks to members here on SS), if you want them when you remove the turret. Just PM me.

Our agency also recently aquired one. So far we have removed the turret, covered the hole, removed all the inside brackets, rhino lined the top, and rhino lined most the interior. Its currently sitting at the body shop getting ready to get painted, The body will be black and the doors will be painted silver, with our graphics.

We've already used it and yes it does.....)

Thanks for the offer, we are going to keep the turret for now at least, we're going to weather strip it to reduce the leaking. Another agency near us rhino lined the entire interior of theirs, it looks really good but it seems that would make it much hotter in the summer. We are going to rhino line the rear bed area at a minimum, we plan on painting the exterior and interior a flat battleship type grey and use our graphics in subdued black.
