Humvee Gear Swap

I haven't bought a Humvee yet. I think they come with 4:56 gears. Is it possible to replace them with 4:30, 4:10 etc gears? Is the truck so heavy that it really needs 4:56? I plan to use it as a work truck nut a mud bogger. It seems a gear swap would be a big improvement. I know there is also an over drive trans available. Perhaps that's the best option. Not sure of price on either of them.

You are confusing HMMWV with CUCV. The HMMWV gears are much lower, but use gear reduction hubs. The CUCV (trucks) have the 4.56 gears

Yes. Overdrive trans (4L80) swap and 6.5 engine. Takes a lot to do it but much better. Now that being said, if you live in town the std setup will work just fine up to about 55

the H1 and humvee factory ratios are 2.56, 2.73, and 3.08.

Don't forget the almost 2 to 1 gear reduction at the Hubs.

Thanks for the input. It sounds like it's best to leave it as is or buy a Humvee with 6.5 and OD tranny.
