your correct on both points. when you have it set you may have to bump it a little one way or the other with a rachet at the blower bolt (gear lash)

I can't give you any advice on the timing but I can tell you that you might want to edit out the Z word and the language even though it is in hash marks. Either one will get a post deleted and a stern warning from the mods, especially as a new member. Dig around in this forum some since there were some real good articles on timing the pump. Is this the original pump? If so it will already have the correct timing button.

What helped me alot was having the onan service manual # 967-0751. page 25 gives a good discription on timing. I tried downloading tonight, but it isnt working. There is also an auction site that we know that may have it when i googled the TM #

thanks guys, I will look at both options, and yes the pump is original, it simply had the return port pluged with junk from sitting. this caused the pump to build back pressure and hydro lock the plungers. The gen was a 1986 that was rebuilt in 2005 with a whole 2.5 hourrs on it when it was refurbed, according to the tag. now the hour meter shows 3.2.
