Makes me wonder what brave sand ladder gave it's life to "armor" that exhaust stack...and why it was necessary. (It doesn't look like it stands off far enough to be good heat shielding.)

Interesting! and I would have to agree self leveling suspension for sure, in the first set of pics you can see the hydraulic lines for it! Pretty interesting looking vehicle, BUT seriously what is with the drip pan, its a new vehicle?

If it's like Ft Riley if it's parked it's panned, even in the field it was SOP if the halt was for more than 10 mins we had to put out drip pans and on a tank it was 3 of them.

I suspect groundwater contamination prevention protocols are the catalyst. Do the vehicles (any of them using drip pans) come with their own pans and a storage location? It would stand to reason, if this was a pervasive requirement, they should have them on board.

In either case, this is a really cool looking vehicle. Anyone know the road speed. I believe it may be even higher than the most recent HMMWV series.

Can someone help me understand what is the difference between the M-ATV and JLTV? They seem to be nearly the same thing.

Very little difference. M-ATV was fielded as part of the 'free for all' when the military needed MRAP's from multiple manufactures after command accepted that those in combat needed armor, such as the JERRV's, Caiman, RG series........ The JLTV was the updated model that won the contract for production with the light armored MRAP.

Also think about providing cues for the enemy - tire tracks can be washed or blow away but oil leaves a stain or rainbow sheen. If you get in the habit of putting down a clean/dry pan every time you stop long enough for a class 3 leak to show itself, you have an opportunity when you pull up the pan and start moving to detect that leak. This is in addition to the potential environmental impact of a fluid leak.

About 10K lbs (4,500Kg), about $220K USD each (about half the cost), and instead of the MATV's medium duty Cat engine (7.2L inline 6) they are running basically the GM duramax equivalent of the 6.5L HMMWV "Optimizer" V8.

Big deal is that being under 18Klbs, they can be air-lifted by a CH-53. The MATV is a beast, think of it as the difference between a Deuce and a 5-ton.

HMMWV was never designed to be armored, the HMMWV suspension and powertrain gets bogged down under the extra weight, and they are not as safe off-road with the added weight of a turret and the other armor so high on the chassis.
