Jump Starting a Deuce

The deuce comes with the old two prong slave terminals. I read somewhere where a guy would put screw drivers into the (-) and (+) and use those as a jumper cable attachement without problems. I'm thinking its the same basic principle.

If you tried to hookup 2 sets of jumper cables to a 24v system, you would short the dodge truck
It's not 24v when putting one set of cables on each battery. You only get 24vdc coming from positive of one battery and from the negative of the other battery. Wayne

Yep, but on the 24v truck one + is connected to one -, on 12vdc truck both + and both - are connected together in the vehicle. you would create a short unless you remove the cables from the batteries on the 12vdc side.

I use two 12v chargers when charging my batteries in the truck and I don't remove the dogbone. Both batteries are charged. Be the same thing if using two batteries to jump start. Wayne

Current is constant in a series circuit. Lead Acid batteries charge based on current. If you replace your batteies, you should always replace in pairs. if you have one battery in a series charging circuit, it will most likely ruin the other battery due to an excess of current. Even with new batteries, if one is more charged than the other, it could ruin the whole setup. I always connect both batteries in parallel and charge with a 12vdc charger to ensure that the voltage on both batteries are the same(voltage is constant in a parallel circuit) before I install in any 24vdc system. This is correct, also, real dead batteries will act as an additional load on the jump vehicle. FYI, if it's an option, change out the batteries at the recovery point. A quick voltage read on the batteries prior to jumping can indicate your path of action.

Ok, at the recovery point the truck will be jumped by the ANG. However, my plans are not to turn the truck off for the 3-4 hour drive home. However, if for some reason the truck needed to be turned off, I just wanted to know if it was possible to jump the truck w/my 12v truck in a pinch. The batteries were good to go according the ANG but someone left the accessory switch on. I'm hoping the drive home will recharge them, but you never know. I have three options 1) buy backup batteries 2) park on a slope to roll start 3) jump w/my truck. Definately don't want to spend money if I don't need to:)

Like several of the replies to the original question said, just pull start it. You're probably going to want to take a tow strap anyway if you're planning on driving it home so, if it dies, just give it a tug with the truck.
This should be especially easy if you've already had it jumped by the ANG and been driving it for awhile.
I had the same issue when I picked mine up and after it died a couple of times on the drive home, we just hooked up the strap, threw the 1/2 ton in 4LOW and she'd start within about 20 yds every time.

You know that is the best idea. Low cost and very much a possibility. No need to spend money, part on a hill, or worry about blowing my electronics up on the truck. I have a medium towbar already to good to go in the back of the Dodge. Thanks.

I **can** tell you this...... trying to jump a 1969 M35A2 with a 2007 Dodge Ram will freak out the computer in your Ram. (Don't ask..... let's just say I have it on good authority.....)

I've tried multiple ways to jump a deuce: with a jump pack, the negative on the ground that goes to the frame and the positive of the other battery that goes to the starter, didn't help. Tried my Chevy diesel the same way, didn't help. Jumped it with another deuce with regular jumper cables, worked, but lots of sparks! Sometimes if the batteries are really dead regular cables struggle (and get hot) it will actually start easier if you disconnect the dead ones and just hook the cables directly onto the battery cable ends, just don't let them touch anything. Of course rolling it off the trailer always works good too.

Don't use the towbar to pull start it, it will be a lot of strain on the Dodge's drivetrain when you pop the clutch use a strap. Wayne

How would I jump my cucv to the deuce? Rear batt off cucv to the + of batt1 on deuce and the - of batt2 on the deuce?
First remove all rings and other jewely and wear eye protection! If using civilian type jumper cables: Connect one end of the Positive(+) cable to the Positive(+) post of the dead battery.Connect the other end of the Positive(+) cable to the Positive(+) post of the good CUCV battery (the battery nearest to the firewall). Connect one end of the Negative(-) cable to the Negative(-) post of the good CUCV battery (the battery next to the rad.). Connect the other end of the Negative(-) cable to a good solid SHINY, NON PAINTED metal part of the deuce. A painted, dirty, or oily nut will not work. You usually want to avoid placing the Negative(-) cable directly on the dead battery to minimize the chance for explosions. You should only use the ground post on the dead battery as a last resort. On this step you'll get a normal spark as you connect the ground and complete the circuit. Be sure you know which post is the 24v one on the deuce. Good luck, Wayne
