I just bought/inspected it tonight, should be picking it up tomorrow. I dont know much about them. it looked to be in really good condition. Here is what i know about it

Its a 1970
the engine is a LDS 465 1A
Overhauled standard bore at TEAD 7/88

has air front differential
has air wipers
manual shift transfercase
air glad hands at rear
no heater or defrosters
removable hard top

A couple things i did notice is that it looks like one of the front axel seals may be leaking as well as one of the rears. I assume these are pretty hard to replace. Its in excellent condition in my opinion. What should i know about them? Anything i should check or look out for? I've heard of some of these being 5 tons, how would i know?

Welcome aboard. Don't drive it home unless you inspect it thoroughly and you know what you are doing.

Then figure out how to use search here and start reading all the manuals.

Good idea if you get the -10 manual and read it tonight.

See if you can get the model number off the data plate. A Deuce isn't a 5-ton but a 5-ton can have an LDS-465 in it.

Axle leaks are pretty common on these. It's usually from plugged vents causing pressure to build up and push out the gear oil. I just did a brake and axle seal job on my A2. It's really not very difficult since deuces are pretty simple. Everything is just very heavy and messy. Don't drive it until you at least repack the bearings where the leak is.

Your lucky to have the LDS in it! Those are sweet in deuces.

6 lugs, easy enough

I will get a manual and look it over, ive worked on many things and have a couple of older tractors so i should have most of the tools i will need.

Thanks you guys are so helpful, i will definately read that manual

Also the parking brake doesnt seem to work on the truck, is it just a cable that could have broken or out of adjustment?

Congratulations on the new deuce. These vehicles have a single circuit brake system and you need to be very mindful that if one part fails you are in deep real quick. Give yourself lots of following distance. As others have said read the operators manual.

The parking brake is a cable, not hard to access. The main thing to check is your brake fluid before you drive it home. Its under the flip up panel in the drivers floor. Those axle leaks could be brake fluid. Its very common for wheel cylinders to leak. Be safe.

Thanks for all the quick repsonses! From what i have gathered from the site i had a 175hp 425 tq engine which is great! i was told it was a whistler when i went to look at it so he knocked a few hundred off when i told him it wasnt because it wasnt a 1c but i didnt realize teh 1a was a better engine

i was aware of the single brake system which i am not a fan of

it is definitely gear oil, owner opened brake resivoir and has added a couple ounces when he got it but hasnt gone down any. i verified it was gear oil, its not a huge leak, but there is some grease as well, is this a HUGE issue for me to adress before a 60 mile ride home? Axles are checked and have full fluid, none has been added either. From everythin i inspected i couldnt see any reason it couldnt be safely driven home, not a bad leak or anything at all

DOT 5 brake fluid, buy some and carry it with you in the truck. I try to always have two pints. Excellent vehicles that are easy to work on. You can find anything you need here in the deuce forum. I had five a few months ago, down to three now. I drive one of them about every day. Welcome to the addiction! Glen

Thats funny, thats what he had a bottle of in the truck, i wondered why it was dot5. i guess he knew what he was doing adding it.

So since this one has the more powerful engine, would i be able to reliably tow 15,000lb or so? My trailer loaded with a farm tractor. i use my Duramax for it now.

Moving a load does not bother me as much as stopping one. I have pulled many deuces with deuces. Trucking right along at 42 ish mph. I am one of the more conservative guys though, some here drive against the governor all the time. 2200 or so is plenty tight enough for me.

Have you heard it run yet? An lds could have a c turbo, and the 1c or 1a does not mean it doesn't have a whistler.

I have driven it, it didnt sound as loud at idle alot of the videos. how can i tell? He wasnt positive about it when i went to look at it. He said it was a white whistler engine but it says continental on the plate. Would that make a difference in the HP rating of the engine?
