Keeping the Humvee Running Cool

Stumbled across this video recently and was curious if there would be any problems with this mod? This changes out the thermostat so coolant flows at 160 degrees and the Thermostatic Engine Fan switch gets switched out so it kicks on at 185 degrees. Currently my Humvee is running within spec (fan kicks on right at 220 degrees) and was considering getting a fan kit from Black Dog Customs but thought this might be a good option to help the Humvee run cooler for a fraction of the cost.

This is a diesel engine, this is not a gasoline engine.

This engine likes to run hot. If you run it too cold, which is mostly below about 190 degrees, the engine will not have as complete of combustion as it should, and you will cause issues if it stays that way too long.

There is a viscous clutch unit that will work to help keep it more consistently cooler than the 220 mark, and you won't get the big surge in cooling as the current setup gets kicking on and off like it does.

Do NOT put in a colder thermostat to try to make it cooler. If it was meant to run cooler, then in the 40 years of production they would have changed out the thermostat, but they haven't.

It's your truck, so if you really want to mess with it you are more than welcome to, but don't be surprised if you start having issues later on

I would not mess with your truck unless its overheating. In which case, I would fix whatever is broken, rather than implement some sort of aftermarket mod. Just my opinion.
