I just had an interesting thought. Where there any M109A3s included in this group of USAF trucks?

Interesting. That would help explain some of the gaps in the unit numbers and serial numbers.

Some of the trucks have the unit number stamped on the data plate and some do not.

But he states the van was a 1970's vintage one. Sounds like a motorpool retrofit job to me.
My 109a3 is officially an 88, but there just are some items that I question if they were 100% new in 88. Every tag on it has a mfg. date of 1988. However when I overhauled the interior of the van box, it had some indicators that it was "redone" at one point. Most of it had 80's-90's era 3m Double stick foam tape (without the backing removed from one side) as a vibration dampener / rust barrier between the sheet metal panels and the framing. (My dad was a 3m employee, so I know my foam tape:)) Anyway, the front section of the box still had some older felt material rather than the foam tape. It also appeared that the power inlet had originally been at the top front of the box, but was later relocated (by AM General) to the lower front of the box.
The glove box has an AM General sticker showing rust proofing applied in march ‘88. I just dont think the felt would have been from the 80's.
The only other indicator that makes me think some of the late model trucks (m109’s anyway) were not 100% new parts is the serial number on my dash plate.

The Data plate has CONTRACT NO. DAAE07-85-C-J047, and the ID NO is NKOE72 xxxx-xxxxx
I haven’t found the number on the frame yet (I know where its supposed to be, but don’t want to sand down the area just to find a number that I don’t really need yet). The KNOE72 makes me think it was a 1972 frame but admittedly that is just a guess.... please let me know if you think that means it could have been a 72 frame or not. Again everything else I’m sure is 88. I just wonder if AM General reused some frames and van boxes when they made “new” trucks in the late 80s.

Here are a few other things on my truck that may be of interest for those looking for patterns/oddities in these 87-89 trucks:
-Has dual circuit brakes same as the m35a2s of the same years
-has a plastic battery box
-had a pioneer rack (until I removed it)
-came from GL with 7 of the clearance lights across the back bottom of the box (1 on each side at the rear, 3 in the middle rear, 1 on each rear side along with a non functioning reverse light)... I dont know if it came this way from AM General for sure, but all the brackets and wire harness look production quality
-Front turn signal buckets are aluminum.

Hmm peashooter. You may very well have an older box. Looks like your van box has the M109A4 updates. Everything from the rail system on the rear door to the clearance lights. As you know, they took 3-4 M44A2 based trucks to make an M35A3/M109A4 truck. With that said, they could have swapped out the van box. However I'm sure your cab and chassis is a 1988 by the pics. AM General didn't scab together parts to make the late model deuces (1987-1989). However, when the US Army rebuilt their deuces (ie: Tooele Army Depot) they scabbed parts together to "rebuild" a deuce. My 1988 M109A3 has the NKO Vin number as well. Now, do you have a manuf dataplate on the front driver side of the box. Should be right around the corner. Mine has one with a manuf date of 1988 on it as well.

Yeah the box has a '88 date on it also. I just don't think it was originally made in 88. WScougarx, what are the 2 digits after your KNOE number?... And do the match with the serial on your frame? Do those numbers represent frame year? Thanks
