If you remove one of the lower bolts that hold the CV bolt shield on and oil comes out that is a good sign that an axle seal is leaking. Not hard to fix, just everything is heavy and greasy.

Remember that the boot is just a dust seal...keeps dirt and water off the moving parts inside.. If you have a liquid leak there are further problems like a clogged axle vent, overfilling of banjo, wrong oil, water in oil, overgreasing of kingpins etc... ACE

I thought my seal was leaking due to an oily looking boot, but upon removing the slimy boot, it was only grease in there, so got off easy on that one. The oil was from under the truck, a leak of about 1 quart/1000 miles can make a very big mess.
