LMTV door handle repair

After a long bumpy ride today I got back home and discovered the passenger door will not open from the outside. At the end of the Latch handle assembly is a single retaining bolt and that bolt had worked loose. Somehow the rod or link from the latch handle up to the lock has come out of it's socket at the end of the handle (one of those 90 deg double bends). After determining there was maybe a mm of extra room for tilting the handle assembly while holding the latch open, it finally came out. BTW, there is absolutely no way to get a hand or a tool into the area.

Got the handle out but it got dark (I was hungry too!) before I figured out how to get the loose rod (two rods total) hooked back into the mechanism and the whole thing back into the door. I don't see any way!

Looks to me that the two rods may have to be removed totally from the lock above, inserted into the latch-handle assembly, then the rods guided back into the door and up to the lock as the handle/latch is maneuvered into place.

Has anyone done this and can describe the procedure?
Thanks,

Bob

I had both my outside door handles off to get tem keyed. Not a big deal. A 10mm bolt I believe is what held one in. It takes a little maneuvering to get heroes loose but they'll come loose.

Maybe "heroes" is a spelling autocorrection? Or a term I do not know?

So it IS possible to get both the rods attached to the latch (turning both 90 deg to insert) and get the assembly back in the door. Thanks. I feel a challenge coming on tomorrow!

Thanks.

yeah, I don't know what my iPad did there. It should have said to get them loose. Lol
