Looking for old thread on home made ratcheting tire carrier

Search is not my friend. Anyone remember the author or the thread regarding someone making their own home made version of the rear ratcheting spare tire carrier that attached to his airlift bumper?

This was posted maybe a year or more ago.

My friend on another Hummer (H1) forum wants to make one, and I'm hoping to help him to avoid re-inventing the wheel.

The ratcheting screw jack portion of the assembly can be found in the tractor accessories area at Tractor Supply stores. It is a stocked item at every store I have visited. Also a great source for the 3/4” and 1” pins for military tow bars.

Please ask your friend to let you post pictures of the finished project. I would appreciate seeing it, as I’m sure other members would. It would inspire many of us to try our hand at fabrication.

Hey everyone, I'm TOBASH's friend. Thank you for providing this information for me. I'm far from a veteran at fabrication but I've managed so far

The design posted earlier looks very similar to the rhino carrier - which I would use except that I quite often use my wagon barn doors, and it's my understanding that in order to swing away the tire on a rhino, you actually have to ratchet the tire up a bit to get over the catch lip.

I've ordered some components from 4xinnovations that will help with the hinge and latch parts - I just need to figure out the structure and the lowering mechanism. The ratchet jack looks pretty promising and I've already checked - and sure enough there's one available today at my local TSC. I had in mind a fancy setup with an ATV winch providing the muscle but this seems to be a lot simpler for sure.

Glad you have access to a nearby Tractor Supply Store. They have an amazing inventory of hinges, nuts & bolts, pins and just about anything self reliant fabricators like farmers and ranchers and DIY’ers put to good use.
They also have 5’x6’x3/4” rubber horse stall mats that are great for bed mats in military vehicles.
I am not associated with TSC in any way other than being a long time satisfied customer with a desire to share the source lead with this M/V community. Good luck with your project.

I will be making one soon, just ordered the hinge set and bought the ratchet at TS last night. Just gotta head to greenville for some steel.
