M 925 Lube Question

I was going to do my winch repair on my M925 this weekend but since i can't find the right oil to refill my winch tank i decided to wait on that project. Not wanting to waste the weekend i got the manual out and started lubing all the zerk fittings listed in the manual.

Now for my question, my manual lists two zerk fittings on either side of the front axle next to the zippered boots. I looked on my axle but the Problem is my axle doesn't have any zerk fittings on the axle next to the boots, what it has is four plugs where the zerk fittings should be.

So my questions is this, should i just forget about lubing the front axle. Or should i remove the two plugs on each side of the axle boot, install zerk fittings, lube the axle, then remove the zerk fittings and replace the plugs?

Or can i just leave the zerk fittings in place after greasing them, or were they originally removed and replaced with plugs by the military for some reason?

The LO says;

7. FRONT AXLE UNIVERSAL JOINTS AND STEERING KNUCKLE BEARINGS

Every 6,000
miles (9,600 kilometers) or 6 months, whichever occurs first, disassemble and

lubricate front axle shaft and universal joints. Refer to TM 9-2320-272-20-1.

Just happen to have the LO 9-2320-272-12 on the kitchen table. Lube points (L) on card 19 of 23 show lube zerks. I would replace the plugs and make sure they do not interfere with the steering.

I remove the plugs then just pump the grease in then replace the plugs.
Or you can install a zerk and then when your done replace the zerk with the plug.
You need to remove the two plugs not just one due to letting the air out when you
pump the grease in.

Well i did what you guys said, on the first side i took the time to install both zerk fittings, kind of a pain getting them to start in the threads. On the second side i just removed the plugs and pumped in the grease. Let me tell you its alot easier doing it this way then messing with installing those zerk fittings.

I have seen that statement in the LO "disassemble and lubricate front axle shaft and universal joints". I'd like to know how many MV owners actually do that. I'm not questioning the LO, but that's an awfully big job. My M923 has 6000 miles on it and I'm scratching my head if its worth it to do that...

I believe there are 2 types of axles/joints and one appears to be solid and sealed. Unless the axle seals are leaking or exposed to water or the pumpkin got water, I would think it is ok.

Maybe when pulling the axle to change the seal but you are correct that is a major job.

Don't forget that there is a spindle bearing inside the spindle that needs lube and periodic cleaning.

Item # 5.
