I have a 1984 M1008. I just put a new axle seal in it because it has been leaking. There is nothing wrong with the new seal. My vent line is also clean and clear. The seal is still leaking. Does anyone know what else it might be? Has anyone had similar problems?

I've got an '85 1028 and the left rear is a similar situation.I noticed when I replaced the seal that there was slight scoring on the hub.Very slight but enough to allow some leakage.I might try to find a NOS hub next. I tried gentle emery cloth but the right has no scoring and does not leak.aua

Guys if your rear axle is still leaking after you put a new seal in one you might have damaged the new seal going in or two the area were the seal rides is wone just enough to leak. Now stemco makes a 2 piece seal for one ton axles. what they are is a ring that goes on the axle first then the seal goes in the hub like all others then put the hub back on and tighten up. if you go to a good truck store and tell them you want a stemco 2 piece seal for you one ton they should be able to find in.but be very carful puting the first ring on the axle any nick or dent on were the seal rides will leak. and just a tip when you put the ring on the axle put some good RTV on the inside like it is recomended. I will try to get some part numbers and pics tomorrow as I am not working tomorrow

I ended up fixing my problem. I found at the spindle has a small groove worn in it from the axle seal. Which after reading many forums I found out this is a really common problem on 14 bolt rear ends. Offroaddesign.com has a seal to fix this particular problem. I ordered it and installed it, my rear end is no longer leaking. When we got the seal we googled the part number and found out all it is is an axle seal for a 2000 and up GM 14 bolt.
