Hi Guys, Im still fighting with the 1984 M1008 i recently purchased. When i got it someone had already made a mess of things, but im slowly getting it put back together. I dont even know if the truck was running before, so ive just been getting basics pieced back together, i got electricty & fuel flowing today to see if she would crank. I got turning over and she tried to start a couple times, but im not getting fuel at the injectors. Ive got fuel at filter and before the injection pump. So does this mean my injection pump is shot?? Ifso whats my cheapest route here being i dont even know the condition of truck, engine or tranny. Any tips or advice will be greatly appreciated!!@

Check to make sure you have 12v at the fuel shutoff at the pump. And see if the shutoff will click when you remove and add power

The TM troubleshooting section covers how to do this

Sounds like the high pressure lines to the injectors still have air in them. Check that fuel shutoff first. If its good, time to bleed the injectors. Make sure the filter is first purged of air. Then I would remove the glow plugs, makes it easier on starter and batteries. Put a piece of cardboard an each side inner fender, shows spray marks well and makes clean up effortless. Then loosen all 8 injectors, take care your cranking cycles are short with cool off time for the starter in between. Tighten the injectors as they show a good spray pattern not just a little spitting.

Thanks i'll try both of these tomorrow. So are the injection pumps not bad for going out or do they not go completly out? I was kinda getting the idea it might have been the pump just because of the condition it was in when i got it. Whoever was working on this truck before had removed starter, glow plug relay and the outlet line from the mechanical fuel pump, along with batteries. So i have no idea what was going on an i can only guess they fried the starter while trouble shooting. Atleast there was no hacked wiring an such. Hopefully i can get her running with alil more work, i love these trucks. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!

I am assuming that you do have glow plugs that are operational. It will not start if the glow plugs are not working. Get the air out of the fuel system with the glow plugs non operational. And then get the glow plugs working properly. It should start. Yes they are know for injection pump problems. If you can not get fuel out to the nozzles you have the injection pump problem. Just make sure that you have good batteries and don't over heat the starter. When it and if it does start the smoke and dust is going to fly. So keep the air cleaner in place. And don't over rev the engine on the first moment it starts. Who knows how long it's been sleeping. Be nice. And good Luck.

Dude.. is right got to have glow plug to start..if wireing, relay, temp sender, card is all jacked up make up a temp wiring harness and touch to pos side of front batt, for 10 sec intervals. motor wants to run all it needs is fuel and air and little heat.

I ordered a new fuel shutoff solenoid since my wasnt working. When i install the new is there anything special to putting it back together? With the way the arm is made i just wanna make sure theres not a certain postion or such when installing?? thanks in advance

Yes. You need to be careful not to jam the shutoff solenoid arm into the metering valve blocking it open (think runaway engine).

Pull the cover off the pump and swap the solenoid. You'll want to be careful not to scar up the aluminum when removing the old dielectric gaskets where the studs are.

Once that is done make sure the throttle arm on the pump is in idle position (very important). You want to lower the cover onto the pump in a specific way to ensure you don't wedge the solenoid arm behind the metering valve. The best way to describe it is that you want to keep the cover parallel with the pump body, but lower it at an angle starting towards the front of the truck and sweeping it towards the firewall as you lower it. It's OK to place the cover on the pump about 1/2" forward of where it belongs then slide it towards the firewall.

All that being said, it is nearly impossible to screw up as long as the throttle is in the idle position when you put the pump back together.

thanks, sounds ez enuff.. I cant wait on the solenoid to come in, ive been working on getting her running. When i bought my current m1008 i was kinda scared she might not come back to life without a donor heart(motor). lol. but with what ive seen im pretty sure this solenoid is why the PO. couldnt get her going. But when i get the solenoid in ill know for sure. Ive done the following upgrades so far, to prevent known problem areas.

doghead starter mod
glow plug resistor removed
12v conversion roscomon
spin on fuel filter
electric fuel pump (installed to make it easier to try & get her running, since mech pump wasmissing when i got it)
