Just as a wild guess.. Check the ground wire that connects from the engine to the fire wall.
Take both sides off and clean the connections.

This one is important. I forgot to connect it after R/R'ing a head and the engine used the steel lines between brake master cylinder and proportioning valve as the ground. They started smoking while glow plugging.

Thanks.. i was able to find on here a file with about 34 ground points on the M1009, working through each of them. Will also check your suggestion as well, thanks!
