M1008 starter issue

Bought a project for my son and I to work on he wants to make it a daily driver. Have replaced 2 starters in 2 months. It was from a fire dept and the converted to 12v. Going to have it painted tan this fall. Should we convert it back to 24v to solve starter issues.

What issues are you having with the starters? Are the starters 12 Volt? And do the batteries have sufficient cold cranking amps? Get the batteries load tested and make sure you have a 12 starter and it is wired properly. I had a customer bring me his CUCV truck with starter problems and he had a 12 volt starter on it. Come to find out his brother worked at PennDOT back in the day when PENNDOT had Chevrolet 6.2 crew cab road trucks. Well his brother had 4 starters brand new GM and they were going to be thrown away. He saved them and would just swap the solenoids from 12V to 24V. His brother swore that was all that was different. Finally after the 3rd starter in 6 months I took one to the rebuild shop and they called me and told me the starter motor was 12 V and the solenoid was 24 volt. I was never told differently and never knew it just swapping the starter. I mentioned this in another post. This same truck had 3/8" 16 bolts into the block and they appeared tight. The M10 x 1.5 is that close. It was the head size of the bolt that made me even look twice. To an unfamiliar person all seemed normal. What I am getting at is a lot of variables can take place as soon as you start changing things and mixing parts. Get all your parts and wiring figured out and you will live happily ever after, Good Luck. Be Safe.

Thank you. We Will start there. When it is running the thing is a beast! Only has 50K on it and got a good deal. We afford to put some $$ in it to make it a daily driver for him. Kids these days just want new and I’m glad he has taken interest it this project. Everything else is sound on it.
