M1009 replacement instrument panel

Having trouble with the alts not turning on and charging the batts, I have tried the suggestions on previous threads and I believe I may need a whole complete instrument cluster and dummy lights. Do I have to replace a diesel instrument panel with a diesel? Or will a gas engine cluster work as a replacement?

If you want your alternator circuits to work, the cluster has to be from another CUCV. You should try cleaning the contacts and replacing the bulbs on the one you have before you give up on it. If it has no rips in the plastic or signs of short circuit, it is probably fine.

Thanks Mate, I had a feeling it had to be. I tried new bulbs and I'll ck out mine more closely in the sunlight and retrace all my lines again.

Basic questions.

1. Do you have a voltmeter and know how to use it?

2. Is your truck stock as far as you know? Any modified wiring?

3. Have you checked and cleaned all the fuses in the fuse box? The very top heater fuse controls the GEN1 excitor circuit.

4. Have you checked out the wiring diagrams is the appendix of the TM 9-2320-289-20 or TM 9-2320-289-34 technical manuals? Or at www.CUCVElectric.com


The CUCV instrument claster is very basic. Unless the circuit board is really damaged you should be able to get it to work.

We will just take it one step at a time and check each part of the circuit to find the problem. Please bear with us as we step you thru it.

Sir Warthog, please bear with me. You've been great!
I do have a very good voltmeter and I know the basics of it!
The rig is mostly stock(a push button start added) otherwise it's original.
The fuse box on this one is rough but functional, I will go thru it again tho and clean it up.
I need to review the diagrams more closely, they make my head hurt!!
I'm not a mechanic and this is my first diesel.

Is the push button start for the starter or glowplugs?

I have been through many of these trucks and even took a wiring harness out and traced each wire.

By the end you will be an expert yourself.
