OK SS I NEED HELP!!!!!!

ALRIGHT....... Long story--- and dont know where to start,
my first problem i had 3 months ago was i got stuck, so i got out and engaged the locking hubs (so i thought) truck still wasnt in 4WD, hubs were free spinning and what not finally after an hour of knob dicking the beast climbed out the hole (easily)!!

Well after that incident i turned the locks back to FREE (so i thought), and went on about my business, well today my friend was driving behind me and he called and said why are your hubs locked in, i said i dont know ill check when i get home....

I dont know anything about this subject, so i dove head first into her, pulled the locking hubs off and this is what i found:

1. the first spring uncompressed and then everything else just kinda fell out, next came a gear looking guy, then another spring behind it

2. So i compressed the first spring back into the locking hub cap and screwed the retainer nut down, set that aside

3. next i put the rear spring back in, and the slid the gear looking dude back inside then reinstalled the locking hub cap, put the 6 screws in and BOOM.....ran some test and found some other things im not familiar with!???

1. with the hubs still in the FREE position, in 2WD drive, the half shafts arent spinning anymore like they were today (good i think)

2. with hubs still in free position, i put the truck in 4WD half shafts spin and truck climbs and pulls like its in 4WD ...hard to turn all that crap---back to 2WD half shafts dont spin

3. i put the hubs in LOCK position half shafts spin but doesnt pull like 4WD, i put the truck in 4WD and pulls just the same as before....

Bottom line truck acts likes its in 4WD no matter what position the hubs are in, when in 2WD it acts fine...

Pulled the locking hubs completely off, put it in 4WD and it still pulls through the roof

I know this is long so im sorry ahead of time, and i know i need pics, will post if somebody needs more info???

HELP AND THANK YOU

Perhaps you are relating pulling like in 4x4 with the way it drives in low range. You need to read the -20 manual to see how the hubs are assembled.

It's pretty easy to tell if the hubs are engaging properly if you test with the front end on jack stands. Leave it in 2wd and just spin the tires both locked and free and look for the difference. Sometimes hubs need greased and worked back and forth a bit to get them in good shape.

Locked = shafts spin
Free = hubs only spin

IF you used too much grease assembling the ring gear will not slide in and out. keeping it engaged. Also put the hubs in free and the tcase in 2wd. Then try turning the front driveshaft by hand. Rock it back and forth to get the hubs to release. If the drive line is binding fron driving it in 4WD on a hard surface jack up one front wheel off the ground to relieve this binding. At this point, if its assembled right it will release the front axle.
