M1028 6.5 supercharged/4L80e project and questions

Because I have some questions about my chevy that I'm working on and help others out with their future build I started this thread

Late 2018 I found the M1028 at SS and was able to buy it and ship it to Europe, the Netherlands.
It came with the 4l80e already mounted to the standard 6.2.

In the meanwhile we have worked on de body to remove most of the rust and lifted it 4" with the ORD flip kit.
Still have to change the right in and outer fender and also the right rocker panel.
Also got a set of 35" wheels mounted.

Now it's time to move on with the next steps
1) The installation of the crossover parts and some new bushings.
The parts have just arrived and already tried the Jeep XJ steering shaft. It seems to fit as expected
2) Install the 6.5TD I picked up yesterday
3) Sort out the rear brake problem. The left rear doesn't get enough pressure.
I think the front proportioning valve causes the problem. (rear has already been removed)
All the lines, and other hardware in the rear is already new.

The questions, for now, are about the 6.5

The numbers: F034 and 10149599 shows a 1994 engine possibly a 6.2 or a 6.5.
Found some information in the following link.

I know it’s a 6.5 and it has a tagplate on the valve cover of the company Reviva.
I only found one topic referring to a Reviva engine.
https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/pisked-up-a-6-5-today.75564/#post-944821

The engine it selves came out of a ’96 3500 army pickup. <60K miles.
It doesn’t look like it has many miles on it. I even think the heads are not that old.
All the paint etc is still on it.
I think this engine was rebuild by Reviva and mounted in the ’96 while it was still being used in the army.

The 6.5 is going in to the m1028 and first priority is to get it running.

I will replace the IP with the one of the 6.2 and turn up the fuel screw and install a lift pump.
Also I’m planning on keeping the one alternator that’s already mounted on the engine with the serpentine belt.
Therefore I’m going to convert the truck to 12v. (12V starter is already on the engine).

The AC compressor can go and I also think about to remove the vacuum pump and install a manual wastegate.

So time for some questions:
1: Is there any information available with the information on the Reviva plate?
2: Is there an visual difference in a “stock”6.5 ’94 and mine?
3: Is there a AC bypass pulley available for a ’94?
4: Are these the right serpentine belts for this engine with and without the vacuumpump?
https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog...sel+turbocharged,1161548,belt+drive,belt,8900
5: What would be the correct manual wastegate?

If I missed something let me know and tips and trics are always welcome!

Heath Diesel and other vendors have the non-computer controlled wastegate.

Wow you have a lot of patience to fix that rusty mess. Trucks like that I part out without a second thought.

Thanks for the tip. I have just ordered one from heath diesel.

Luckily its not my daily driver. I'm working on it sometimes in the weekend and having fun learning how to do the body work.

Just sent you a message on WhatsApp showing Leroy's turbo master (spool stick as he calls it), same idea though. Removing the vacuum pump removes any future problems.

Don't forget about gauges. Turbo pressure and exhaust gas temperature. I got mine from vdo-webshop.nl. I did however buy a Chinese thermocouple. 227 euro for the thermocouple + 142 euro for a (way too long) extension cable is way to expensive IMO. Haven't installed it yet though, still need to drill and tap into my exhaust manifold. Gauges look good.

I noticed the 95 6.5 has the alternator on passenger side and 96 6.5 has the alternator on driver side.

I’ve never seen a 6.2 with the 6.5 turbo set up OEM. The 599 block is for sure a 6.5.

It is claimed that the 599 is the best block for the 6.5 years.

I like your body work you did! You did a lot so far! Much respect bring back an old square body

Not at this moment. First priority is to get the engine connected so it runs and drives again.

Maybe next year I'll start with the upgrades.
First I have to know the engine sounds ok.

Everything is now disconnected, unfortunatly I did not have more time today. So next week we'll pull the motor out.

I highly recommend replacing all the 6.5 gaskets, add Arp studs, new lifters, girdle and Fluidampr before putting the 6.5 in.

I call it a bomb proof refresher. At least you can add a bigger turbo down the road if you wanted to and know your motor can handle it.

Even the 599 blocks can crack and cranks can break.

I understand why, only I haven't heard the engine running at the previous owner. First O want to be sure it is functional. The wires are correct and all the other lines etc are functional.

After that and some test driving I probably pull it out again. It's not that time consuming or difficult.

I pulled the engine out of the truck today.
Removed the steering pump an swaybar.
After that I used some degreaser and the high pressure washer. Most of the sticky grease is now out of the engine bay.

Tomorrow I'm going to test fit the ORD steeringpump bracket. And also check the brake balancer, it lookes like the rear is blocked for a few %.

Also removed the wiring from the 6.5 and replaced the ac compressor with the bypass puly. I will make an extra bracket to get a solid mount. The vacuumpump is also gone and I'm waiting for the heath mechanical controler.

I also saw that the exhaust manifold is a '99.
I expect that it has been changed after earlier mentioned rebuild.

The plans have changed. After I had bought a rebuild IP I found out it was not going to work with my engine. The sprocket inside is different for an electric pump and it needed to be changed.

The compagny who sold me the pump offered me to make it fit. And also told me about the Rotrex C30 supercharger they install on the 6.2 or 6.5.
The guy rebuild approx 50 6.2/6.5 engines a year. For boats, trucks, busses and in most cases Hmmwv's.
So... I could not resist and left without the engine.

This afternoon I recieved the enclosed pictures of the alsmost finished engine.
I should be ready for pickup within a week or 2. Then I can make some more detailed pictures.

Couple of changes to the stock engine, as far as vissible and I can remember.
Rotrex C30
Double thermostat housing
Vacuümpump delete
Relocated oil filter
New high output injectors
High flow oil pump

More details will follow

Nice, nice, nice, nice, nice. Anxious to hear how the Rotrex supercharger works out. Any plans to add an intercooler?

Can't wait to hear it to!
I'm not planning to do that right now, maybe next winter I will. First I'd like to get it back on the road.

Ballpark of the price. Up to 6 a 7k dollars.
More than the price of the complete truck in first place 😅

Curious if you know what model of the C30 they are using as well as the pulley size? Also what type of boost they are expecting with the pulley size they've installed.
It runs again :) I got a call this afternoon because the enigine ran and so I could hear it. It sounded goooooddd
He makes sure the engine runs correctly and get it ready for the engine dyno.

This saturday I will go there and also the Rotrex guy from Denmark will be there.
To make any nessecary adjustments and then we'll test it to see the end results.

I'll make a video of it running and if there are more quetions let me know and I'll try to get all the answers.

Curious to hear the details! I have played with the idea of using a roots style supercharger mounted remotely but ran into an information roadblock with the local distributor. However there are a couple distributor of the Rotrex not that far from me. I like the planetary drive over the direct drive for the roots...

I have seen the engine today on the dyno and the results are below.

I like it how it sounds and performs with 215bhp and 510nm. 0,7bar/10.2psi.

The engine holds the torque steady during its pull. And later this week I'll get the results on paper and post it here.

If it all goes as planed I'll start putting it back in my truck next weekend and hope to drive again this summer!
