I'm going to start fabricating a new front bumper for my M1028A3 Wrecker today. It will have a hydraulic Milemarker 10,500 lb winch mounted in it running off the power steering pump. I will also build a pocket into each side to store some chains. The bumper will be made from a 76" piece of 8" square tubing 1/4" thick. It's weight will help me keep the front end down when I'm recovering folks with the wrecker boom.

Got the winch mounted/bolted into the bumper. Enough for today. I'll continue over the July 4th weekend. I'll have to cut out the cable opening and mount the fair lead next.

2 2 1/4 holes for the ends of the fair lead opening.

Connect them with a cut off wheel.

I'll dress up the opening with the grinder but no one will see it behind the fair lead.

Of course I just ran out of shielding gas on the MIG welder and the local welding shop is closed until Monday.

My wife convinced me to put the (slightly modified) brush guard into the project. She's right. It will look good. I'll weld it up once I get some argon.

Looks great James! Very solid, but not too large for the truck. Should be great for a work truck. You're wife is right. The brush guard IS the CUCV.

that is really good work. now that you have it together, do you think 6x6 box would work with room for the winch. The 8x8 looks good on your truck with the flatbed but I am looking to build a sturdier bumper for my 1009 where I can retain the brush guard and I think yours is just a little to large for the 1009 but a 6x6 would probably be just right.
I measured my winch and I think it would fit but just stick out the top a little more.

First I dig that Truck, and being an A3 makes me want one or copy. The front recovery bumper is very tough, KOOL, and when finished give me a pound figure to compare to, please. My front already seems heavy with mine, K30 Silverado Dually, lifted, and big block. I am at 100 plus winch. I have everything to replicate your truck accept the bed. I plan on bldg another truck like your A3. I can get a 440 Holmes mechanical, is that what yours has? And is your truck chassis standard or rear axle shifted? Thanks if any info applied to my questions.
