Hey Everyone. I just picked a maintenance truck up. The generator and compressor was there. I need ideas! Do I keep the maintenance shelter or ? My goal is to run Humvee tires. I need suggestions. Thx in advance...

That is a nice one!! I never had one with the maintenance box...are you keeping the compressor and genset in there or is that what you were asking about? Keep it or remove it...the last pic has a box next to the oil fill...looks like it's hooked to the throttle...since I've never had a maintenance one I haven't seen that...you know what it is? Both mine don't have that...if the genset runs and the compressor works can always sell it separately or just keep it if you use those things...I'd do a camper setup in it...remove the boxes and leave the doors so you can open up at night to stay cool or close up if it's cold out...probably be a little work cleaning it out like that but looks fun.

Really nice looking truck. Check the oil and other fluids, jump in and drive her up to North Carolina!

I vote to not remove the box. These are rare like the M1010 variant. If you want something else find it. I'm thankful the guy who owned my M1031 didn't part it out for the axles.

Don't waste your time with the Humvee tires. Your commiting to an ancient rim size, they aren't great at anything, and you'll be hard pressed to find a set that are round without rot for good money.

They do look good and you will gain some top speed with them. But if I could go back in time I'd save myself from making that mistake.

Keep the SECM box, generator and air compressor. Useful and built like a brick outhouse.
I moved the air compressor over the generator using steel rails bolted to the racking. More bed space.

During our February winter storm, the generator provided power for me and two neighbors..12 kW is real power. Sure, it is 208 3 phase but that means 45 amps into three circuits of 120 volts each. That is 9 space heaters, each 1800 watts. How so? Well, it is 12 kW at a power factor of 0.80 so with pure resistance loads, it is a 15 kW generator. I had zero question it could swing the load as it was 9 °F outside and it was just not going to overheat.

I was a bit outside of code. The 120 volt outlets were all full, then ran another 3 duplex receptacles from my 3 phase welder extension cord. Janky as frig but we stayed warm.
This generator uses magnetic amplifier to control the voltage, no electronics. It is a favorite to power center pivot irrigation motors and oil rigs due to its overload capacity. Scrapping them is a crying shame.20210215_054432.jpg

Nice ole 1031..

Just my 3 cents; I'd leave the truck as is and keep the box on it. As for the humvee tires, don't waste your money on a size that's not readily available when there's much better options for tires out there

**change the harmonic balancer on the 6.2 diesel asap. The existing unit may look okay, but the rubber is hard n dry thus reducing it's ability to dampen the crankshaft. Old balancers kill these engines. No need to over think it, a new OEM style replacement unit will work just fine.

I am perfectly happy with 255 85 16s on reproduction 8 inch wide rims on my M-1031. Cooper Discover S/T Maxx, good highway manners plus they look far better. Might be subjective but they feel more stable in cross winds.

With my air compressor relocation, I comfortably sleep in the back. Have been thinking of a roof top tent, possibly using some 3/8" plywood on top of the box to reinforce the aluminum.

The total package of having tools and power is the best, it has a Miller Dynasty 200 DX SMAW/GTAW welder, a Victor 100 cutting/welding rig, oxygen, acetylene and argon bottles, abrasive chop saw, three angle grinders, 1/4" Metabo electric die grinder, air die grinder, porta band, general mechanic tool sets, 50 amp non contact pilot arc plasma cutting torch, clamps and many other tools. No wonder it is 8600 pounds 😏.

^^what he said..

I'm a big fan of the 255 85 16 tire. I run that size with a BFG KM2 on my 86 M1008 and Toyo MT on my 79 K20. Both are mounted on the factory wheels and there's no fender rubbing. With the weight of the M1031, I would recommend the Toyo MT because of the stiffer sidewalls and a true 33.5in tall when mounted.

You can rewire the head for 240v split phase to power your home. It's a 12 lead head so just changing the wire configuration and the plug in the panel...boom your done. You will need to get a new motor for the compressor though. Still, your generator is much more useable for a residential setting.

It's slightly derated in this configuration but at 12kw and the actual size I wouldn't worry. The size of the head is comparable to a 100 to 200kw unit I see in the field. Of course you aren't going to run it at that load but it's built like a tank.

Yes, it is a 12 lead generator, the lead outs are labeled and th he wiring diagram is online. I have been wanting to make a reconnection board to provide a low zigzag 120/240 split and the stock low wye.

I had been looking at a MEP 003A reconnection switch but the complexity was too much for the two connection modes needed.

I had a contact maintenance M1031 I ran a few years. I removed the PTO driven generator and added a Yamaha Diesel generator. I kept burning motors up on saws and the generator add fuel like it was going out of style. The man at the generator shop said it had a dirty sine wave. The term dirty electricity refers to the electromagnetic energy flowing along a conductor that deviates from a pure 50/60 Hz sine wave and has both harmonic and transient properties. I never had any issues after that switching over to the Yamaha diesel. I bought a Yamaha diesel for obvious reasons. The original military generator I sold to a man that had an M1031 that had no generator. That PTO driven generator cost a fortune to run. Imagine an 8 cylinder diesel engine idling and powering up and down all day. The noise and smell were horrible on job sites. The Yamaha diesel sipped fuel and had no odor and hardly a whisper. It was a bit expensive but I bought it from a local Fire Company that wanted a Gasoline generator. That Yamaha generator I removed and sold the truck to a Ferrier that specialized in cow hooves. He added an exoskeleton to the truck and towed a tipper trailer with it. He since sold it and has a new Ford F550 6 X 6 truck. Making $800. a day makes a stinky dirty job a great job. He just wanted A/C and a decent ride after working in the dirt and heat all day. I just seen on the news today that this past summer was hotter then any other summer on record and including the 1935 dust bowl summer. Good Luck with your M1031. I want to add it was painted like a cow. I base coated it white and he painted the black on it. Very different. Enjoy your new acquisition.

Best part would be that all his customers saw his truck in the distance - and knew who it was - and were most likely happy to see him coming.
These days people would get all excited and call that "Targeted Marketing".

I hate to hijack this thread but where can one find info on the gen set and the controls (run criteria) as I own one of these trucks and mine only works if I use something to hold the throttle pedal in just the right spot, just tried a spot light in one of the 110v receptacles and also the compressor runs when i flip the breaker, it just wont control the throttle on its own, looks to be all there throttle actuator and all wiring looks ok, is there any diagnostics for the computer that controls this?

is there a TO for just this acc bed?

Start a new post with model of generator set with application,
Then describe the problems at hand. This might help you

Have a great day

it is the same M1031 truck the OP just bought, and the pto driven gen set that comes in the truck, I thought he may benefit from the info as well

If you get the model number off the generator (post in subject line)
usually it will go to the generator forum and a lot more people will chime in there's some very experienced people that know all generators. then when you describe it's in the maintenance truck you might get help faster that's what I was trying to describe
