The c18 doesn't like to just sit there and idle. its part of the TM to switch the high idle on for any extended idle time. We have CAT and Oshkosh Rep's down here that diagnosed the no start and very hard and slow cranking as hydro - lock due to fuel pooling in the bores.

Hydro-locking can break pistons and bend connecting rods due to high compression and the high torque of the starters.

Can anyone tell me the size of the sight glass on this thing? Gear was stowed and the glass broke when it was removed.
Thanks

Sorry, The sight glass on the hydraulic reservoir behind the cab at the winch operators station. It is a bullet style glass sight. It sits on the side of the tank next to the filter.

They aren't made very tough. And they sun Rot quickly. I would just put plugs in the holes. I think 1/2"? Just check hydraulic level with flashlight or dipstick. That's what I plan to do when I manage to break mine. Just my 2 cents.

That sight glass is made of actual glass. I've shattered a few in my day. I think finding the replacement is the hard part. If your not running the winches I would put a threaded plug in its place. If you have no leaks in the system, and you know how much fluid is supposed to be in there; properly fill it at each filter service.

Those could work with some modification. Unfortunately the shape and dimensions are different than the ones you posted. I'm trying to Rember how to replace the stock ones. I shattered one in Afghanistan last year.

Hey DieselFreak, good that you are back, was wondering what happened to you what with all the "issues" at Ft Hood a while back.

Thanks NTD. I got back Dec 22nd. As far as the issues go; that was very close to me physically, emotionally and personally. I'm OK and safe. But have shifted my attention to transitioning to civilian life.

I haven't thought about the hydraulic reservoir sight glass before, I really don't like how it protruds. The 916/20 has flat glass, less prone to breaking. A google search for "hydraulic sight glass" brought up companys that have all kinds. Looks to be a 1/2" as stated in previous posts.
