M1078 Fire Truck

If anyone is aware of common problems with the M1078, please advise. So far we have not encountered any problems with our LMTV. That having been said, being a volunteer department funding is just not there to fix a major breakdown. We are performing the preventative maintenance checks listed in the manual, but are curious if there are any problem areas outside of those listed in the military document.

Keep in mind that a good portion of the electrical systems are NOT waterproof and so keep deep water fording to a minimum...

What transmission fluid are you running? There's a thread on here about changing it over from oil to atf. Much smoother shifting.

Simple one, pull the mats in the cab. If rusty under them, fix the rust and check your turret cover seal for leaks. You may have to remove the cover and reseal it. I had to on mine, as it was dripping in the cab every time it rained.

What year is your truck?

Every time you tilt the cab give the fan a shake and make sure it's secure. The original style fan has an aluminum hub and mine sheared off at about 2500rpm sending the fan through the radiator. If it's loose, check to see if it's the bolts (and add thread locker to them) or if the hub is starting to give way. A new fan is only about $100 on eBay but a radiator and the fan clutch can get pricey.

Some other things that come to mind from reading in here

look out for

. loose bolts on air compressor/power steering pump bracket
. Tranny cooler line vibration harden/cracking.... at either end
. Two wires to Alternator Regulator. Symptom..... Alt. not charging well or at all. Search for tips on this by user "Suprman"
. Fan clutch and fan as previously mentioned
. Make sure the drive line tolerances stay within spec. ESPECIALLY rear drive line. Anything out of whack there that can cause vibrations that result in a potential big wallet expense.

IMHO these trucks are intended to be strictly maintained to stay within all specified tolerances so follow the manuals maintenance schedule. From reading of past documents it seems to show these truck's design took into consideration the maintenance plans on military vehicles was going to be followed more consistent and stringent than average vehicles. Another words; they are designed to handle off-road punishment .... but not punishment from slack maintenance.

Luckily for your organization; following maintenance schedules might be easier to do in a setting of a fire house. Not so much so for say a person driving one back and forth across distances on Expedition Adventures. Do you have the various manuals? They are all available on this site.

If you have not seen the story you may find the info on Annavile FD (Tx) SS firetrucks interesting. Very innovative.
Now that they've been in service over a decade it'd be interesting to see what the FD thinks of these trucks now and how they've held up. Of course they were new at the time and hadn't been abused by the military so they might have had fewer issues than we're seeing in the surplus trucks.
