I can't get to the TM library for a few weeks but will check for outrigger info. If other TM requests come up let me know. We found more manuals for 5 tons in a wrecking yard and need to see what we have.
I appreciate the kind words and if you’re able to source something that shows the missing info, it would be much appreciated! I’ve searched through all the Austin-Western & M62 threads I could pull up in Search; I have downloaded copies of the 9-2320-211-35, but no specific info for the items I mentioned. I have also looked through Austin-Western manuals numerous times without success. While there is excellent information available for the A-W cranes themselves, there is no mention of items specific to the M246 apart from the crane assemblies.

The TM9-8028 has some excellent info and clear graphics for these gas-powered trucks, but again, no info for the items I mentioned earlier.

Items on the M246 I cannot find TM listings for (neither repair nor replacement):
- Crane cab enclosure (not including controls/gondola, those are listed), including glass, heater/defroster & hoses, fans, wipers, electrical;
- Rear fenders;
- Rear sheet metal (including mudflaps and mounts);
- Rear outriggers.

Many thanks for any help you can provide sir!

Tried the M819 manual? I believe it is the same body as the M246

TM 9-2320-211-34P appears to be the AF and Army tech manual for the M246, M246A1 and 246A2. This TM covers what may be considered as depot level parts. Stuff that doesn’t normally get crunched or gets too crunched can be found there.
TM 9-2320-211-20P covers more routine parts that are always getting crunched in some manner.
TM’s 9-2320-211-34-1 and several other dashes cover maintenance on the M246, A1 and A2.
Hope this helps.

I see it looks like you have the Zenith Carb. Much better than the Holley! If you come across the TM number for the crane, post the number, it might be in the library at the Museum. If it is, I can send it off to the printer for PDF conversion.

Will that little fuel pump keep up with the demand the 6602 has?

Nice job! These big ol pigs are tough to work on!

Looks like the air filter is missing. If so, want me to look in our inventory to see if there is one laying around?

By chance would you have the TM # available for the 819? I haven’t been able to locate it… I’ve scrolled through so many thousands of pages that I probably overlooked it. Thank you!

Thank you sir! Yes I have all those, and they are all missing the sections I listed above.

The only manual I don’t have is what Will mentioned he used on his museum’s ASMH: TM 9-8029-3. I do have a good copy of the original TM 9-8028, but not 9-8029-3. I also tracked down a PDF of A-W OP-CR53, the original operations manual for the crane itself.

Did a little search on "Austin Western Company Crane" ......then hit 'images' .....and found one with some similarities.

There was also a military reference so there is data out there.

Thanks! The second photo is my actual truck, from the auction house that listed it.

I replied via PM to your manual info.

The little filter seems to be doing fine so far; I don’t get out of first gear around my property & it seems to keep up with the demands from the crane. If not I’ll probably see if I can restore the stock frame-mounted filter.

I do believe the old gasser air filter is still present…it is an oil bath type so I flushed it out and cleaned it, then refilled with some hydraulic fluid. I also installed a high-CFM cover over the inlet since it’s so dusty here.

Thanks!

Also, the OE10mthatt the TM calls for for the crane hydraulics can be replaces with AW43 and it can be mixed.

I am gonna assume that the hydraulic tank on your rig is mounted in the same place as the one on the M62. The one on the M62 is a separate part, not attached to the wrecker body, frame mounted across the back of the cab.

There should be a screw in dipstick, looks like a square drive drain plug, and a plate with what looks like the oil filler/valve cover vent from an old Chevy 283. Under that cover, if it is the same as what we have, should be the inlet to the PTO driven pump. If you get into the tank, see if there is a screen filter pushed onto the bung in the tank. Ours is tapered with ridges on it, like it was meant to have a filter pushed onto it, but there was none, again, TY Nat'l Guard! That's why we had worn out pump vanes, rotor and cam plate. If there is, can you post a picture of it?
