I'm looking to buy an M35A2 and I've read the 140 HP engines have head gasket problems. But I can't positively determine which engine it is. Really don;t want to make a big FUBAR when buying. Or perhaps there is a permanent fix now for this issue.

Thanks

Welcome and there ia a ton of info here on this site. In short, the military went through several iterations of head gaskets until they found one, and torque specs, that they felt holds up better than the previous ones.
The multifuel engines are all high compression engines and that is hard on the head gaskets. Fact is, if you DO own a Deuce, chances are that it had head gaskets replaced in the past or will need them in the future.

Do not fret about it.

Try and read up on what is normal when it comes to oil seepage and leakage around the head gaskets, how to identify the head gasket style ("old" style has weeping tabs sticking out) and compare that to what you see on the truck you are looking at.

If the prospective truck has signs of head gasket failure, negotiate it into the price. If it has a new style gasket, you know they have been done at some point. Many trucks here still have the "old" gaskets and are doing just fine.

And lastly, if you need to do head gaskets, all the info and guidance on how to and what to is right here.

Have fun and good luck!

Thanks. much. There is SO MUCH info here! I've been reading and reading and reading... Did not see the old vs new style gaskets but glad to have the info. Someone just told me it was the 5 ton snd up that had head gasket problems. Like I said I'm new at the research on these and am learing a lot.
Thanks again.

I fixed the link I posted; old links sometimes do not work, but you can easily translate them into the new format and it will open!
Here we go:

Post #15 here: https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/blown-head-gasket.40801/

Note that the real interest is for the picture of the gasket with the tabs! If you do a headgasket you will want the latest model head gasket that has integral fire rings, no tabs and is usually black/grey in colour. Definitely not pink. Reputable vendors here carry it.
