I am going to try to fix my rear axel seals on my duce this next week and
here are a few questions, What will I all need as far as tool's?
What size of socket will I need?
Now I am not sure but I have heard that the M35 wheel bearings
are a packed bearing and not oil bath, If this is the truth
is it possible to convert it to oil bath and what kind of seal will I need to do this? I also have a transfer case seal to fix does any body know what size of seal I will need? Any help would be great.[thumbzup]

Thanks,
Jacob O. Hasart.

True, the wheel bearings are packed. I'm not sure you could ever keep enough oil in them to keep them from cooking. The system has worked for 40 years, why change it now?

You will need the lug/bud wrench, or appropriate sockets, a 3" 8-SIDED wheel bearing nut socket, and a 3/4" socket to remove the axle bolts. You need to read TM 9-2320-209-20-3-2, starting at page 14-46. It spells everything out, step-by-step.

The TM shows the wheels still bolted to the hub when it's removed, but I don't have a wheel jack, so I took them off. It makes the hub easy to handle.

Do a search on "rear axle seal" and you will find several threads that walk you through it. It's not a bad job, just big parts. Be safe.

It is an easy job. We did it this weekend. Put in the outer bearing, slide the cork into the keyway, then slide on the outer seal.

The toughest part is removing the lug nuts and budds.

Thanks for posting,
I may just pack the bearings, I do not drive that much .
Does any body know any part numbers for the seals?
Like from NAPA. Liveing on the farm we should have the right tools.
I have never changed axel seals before,
It should be fun/ May be.

Thannks,

There are no civilian crossover seals for the axles.

If you had searched a bit, absolutely every question you have asked, has been posted in great detail with pictures, more then once in the Deuce forum.

Also, since you own the truck, you really should either buy the tech manuals or download them for free off the Internet. They will help you with every repair you will ever need to make. Even if you only looked at the pictures in the -20P or -34P TMs.
