M35 bed on M105 Frame w/ axle move

OK, I finally got around to completing the trailer for the bobbed M35A3 I am building. The trailer uses the 2x extra A3 tires/wheels off of the 3rd axle that was removed and the A3 truck bed.

I moved the axle back 2'. I moved the air/hydro brake assy back and extended the air side flex line to correct the move.

I figured out a way to test the brakes without a truck too. I drilled out a QD air fitting to screw on the airline then supplied air through a regulator (100 PSI) via facility air.

The tongue weight is 280# (~10% of the trailer's empty weight) and it pulls great.

I bet it is easier to backup now with the axle farther back on the frame. Seems like a longer trailer gives you more time to react.

Yup...

I was thinking the SAME thing when I was looking at the package. All of this work for the same cargo area as when I started the conversion.

Recycling the bed and trailer frame really cuts down on the waste produced by the conversion.

Before I moved the axle back the tongue had -10# tongue weight. Had to use a hi-lift under the rear to keep it on the front dolly wheels.

Yes it is much easier to back now. Shorter truck with longer trailer makes for a nice package for backing.

Looks nice, hey nothing wrong with recycling, better than going to the scrapper, hey now you have a cool truck and a trailer that you can use anytime. Nice Work!!!

I wish it were staying but it belongs to a customer. This truck pushed me over the edge with buying the 900 series 5 ton in HI. I love the automatic...

I like the idea of a easy backing trailer. That short tounge m105 is a pain no matter how I back it.

280# for empty tongue weight is probably OK for an empty trailer - does it cause the lunette/pintle to rattle, going down the road? Might be a little light. But loading that trailer will talk constant attention, versus truck weight. Ever heard of a 105 doing a fishtail on a deuce? Never! Get just a wee bit carried away loading that trailer with something like chord wood and it will push that truck into the middle of next week, and I seriously doubt that it will be in a straight line. Nothing to keep it from fishtailing! Lots of space means sometime, somebody will fill it up! The DOD tried to out guess Folks. The 105 is the size it is, so nobody can overload it to the point that it can cause problems for the deuce!

looks good nice job.But i have to ask why go through all the work to have the same size beds but less weight capacity.It's funny the a3 makes an ugly 6x6 but looks like it was made to be a bobber.But good idea for what to do with the extra parts from doing a bob. as that trailer is nice and way more usable than a m105 since it has a bigger bed no wheelwells and you can actually see it behind a m35.not to mention i'm sure it is a hundred times easier to back up with the extra 2 ft wheel base.
