normal road miles, you can expect around 10 mpg.

Please read the requirements for new members. You need to include your city, and state in your signature.

Aside from that welcome to the forum.

DR!
Hope I am not overstepping my bounds.

Yep, like jt said about 10-15mpg depending on terrain and winds and such. Now the old 5-ton gassers would burn about a gallon a mile sometimes. Yikes.

My tractor has no problems buring the speedo but the engine sounds like its coming apart. I do 52 to 55 on the highway all the time all day long. 11.00X20 tires will give you a little better top end but compromise stopping a bit. My mileage empty hovers around 9MPG but towing 20,000# brings me down to 6.5 MPG.

The problem is that the thing just runs out of gearing. You get up to 2600 and then after that you feel like you're going to put a piston into orbit.

You can swap in a lower OD tranny (very hard) or put on 11.00x20 tires to get faster speeds.

As I learned, the issue is not power. It's not fueling. It's not operator moxy. It's not any of those - it's just plain mathematics of 2600rpm x .85 OD x 1:1 hi range x 6.72 axles x 38" tires.

Cheers
Bob

I was thinking this would be a good high school car to drive to school. not too fast( he wont be racing anyone in this beast) bad gas mileage, so he wont have any money left over to spend or drugs, and is would be quite safe, If he got in a accident, I think he would come out on top!

I'm getting just under 10 MPG and rarely go above 45. Rush hour freeway trips are no problem though, the minimum speed is 45 and nobody dares try to menace you in that thing!

I like the big vehicle plan except for a few details. Number one is the single braking circuit. These things have non redundant brakes, so unless that is remedied, I've have reservations about this especially with someone with only a surface knowledge about the nuances of braking (as opposed to someone with a real functional knowledge of the brakes, who knows what's broken when they step on the brake and it goes to the floor). This is pretty rare, but could be catastrophic.

Also, first time drivers are one of the most accident prone groups out there, and I'm not making any judgement on your young driver. Since the deuce fills up almost an entire lane with VERY little wiggle room, I won't even let some of my friends drive mine unless they have previous experience driving a big truck. You have to plan a buffer zone all around you.

I'd look for an older Pickup - more maneuverable, more agile and able to actually AVOID accidents rather than just "win" them,

I just think back to Sunday. Some driver ahead of me slammed on their brakes to avoid an animal, and then just sort of sat there in the road, slackjawed. Had I not laid on the air horn to awaken them and also stood on the brakes, I would have come quite close to hitting them.

Throw in split rim wheels, and unless you are going to dedicate a few weeks at least to teaching your son the ins and outs of the vehicle itself, I'd choose a slightly less operator-intensive vehicle.

You gotta realize that this is coming from someone who drives a full hyraulic-steering vehicle on the streets regularly. Maybe I'm a worry wort, but putting an inexperienced operator behind the wheel in a deuce worries me.

Oh yeah, did I even mention lap belts aka bisectors or lack of rollover protection? :)

Welp, this gives you a short list of why this plan is a bit concerning. If you can "hang" with this list of concerns, then I would go ahead with this.

Your favorite wet blanket, ;)

Trango has given you you some very good and possibly life saving advice!

The Deuce is at least twice the size of a normal civilian vehicle, and requires twice the skill to drive in traffic!

The brakes aren't as good as a newer vehicle and the lack of visibility is a major factor in lane changes!

They are a great truck to own, but you have to know limitations!

on the DD bit.

I'd look at the M1009 CUCV Blazer or M1008 Truck for your son's DD. They are big and burly. Tough as nails. Most parts are same as civilian. Definite cool factor. Will be a great truck to learn how to fix things such as ujoints, wiring, glow plugs, etc... I bought my M1009 when I was 19 and have had it for the past 10 years. I am just now tired of it and wanting to sell it. It taught me more about turning wrenches than any book could have done. Plus with 3-point belts, padded dash, collapsible steering column, etc... it's a lot safer in a crash.

That's my

I also would have crapped myself if my Dad got me a M35 in HS. Holy crap, I'd a been the baddest mofo in the whole dang place

I get somewhere around 7-8 in mine, but it is pushing a lot of air with the van box. Not even sure how accurate that figure is, as with the big rectangular fuel tank it is hard to refill precicely to the same place repeatedly.

I definitely agree with the concerns on a deuce for a daily driver for someone not experienced with it for all the resons mentioned above. I do not allow others to drive it around here because of traffic; I am paranoid enough as it is myself. It is the other drivers around me that I am concerned about. They do not respect big trucks at all. Single circuit brakes, manual steering, NDT tire lack of traction on the road are a few other reasons not to have one as your only vehicle.

Another concern with a deuce as a daily driver is the parts availability. Not that you cannot get most everything from MV dealers, but if you break down at 6pm tonight and need your vehicle to get to work/school tomorrow, you can't just pick up a new water pump at Napa and change it that night.

having not matured much in the 10 years since I graduated high school, I can say with certainty a deuce might not be the best choice, though you do raise some valid points. Had I had the deuce as my first truck I probably would have quit driving! I had my '73 Chevy pickup, and that was too much for me even. Give a kid a big engine, they'll use it, even if you don't think the truck can do burnouts they'll make it I speak from experience. I even hot rod the deuce when I know I shouldn't. There's something about 14,000 pounds of steel that can go to your head, and if you're trying to show off for your friends it can lead to trouble.

It is a definite chore switching from a power steering, power brake, automatic pickup to the deuce. I know I couldn't have kept track of all the stuff you need to on the deuce as a high schooler. They talk about cellphones being a distraction and how kids shouldn't drive with their friends because it causes wrecks, well, you have to be 100% focused to drive the deuce. No time for chatting (not that you can hear much in the cab anyway)

Well, that's a Deuce of a different color, or was that a horse of a different color?

If he has that kind of experience, then it should be no problem!

Good luck with the project!

Ach. Hopefully you're not looking at the same auctions I am, here in CO at Fort Cartoon.

I AM SORELY TEMPTED TO PURCHASE ANOTHER deuce although that's a real bad idea, I know this much! :)

It would be so cool to totally turn one into a carhauler, though, and keep one as the stock PU bed.

I will not bid. I can't!
