M35A2 Registrations, In NY

Okay, so for those of you that live in New York State, How did you register your M35A2's?
Historical, Commercial, Passenger?
What part of, or did you use the entire ID No. stamped onto the data plate? I know that the first 8 positions are generally the Military Reg/ hood number, but did anyone use this as part of the entire VIN for DMV purposes, or did you use just the last 9 digits?

I haven' registered a M35 in NYS state but I have been successful in registering both a 1952 XM211 and a M135 with nothing but a bill of sale. Both had to be registered commercial as HX plates in NY have a bunch of regulations. Passenger plates were not an option as GVW is over 5500lbs.

As for the VIN, I think whatever is stamped as the serial number would have to be the VIN. NYS DMV WILL REQUIRE a picture or tracing of the vin plate if the VIN is nit in the system. Both my trucks were not in the system or had multiple vehicles with the same VIN. Both got kicked to DMV for investigation before a transferable registration would be issued. Got the one for the XM211 still waiting on the M135.

To avoid problems at the DMV, make sure that you have all of your paperwork, take pictures of the data plates so when they say "there is no such vehicle" or "that is not the VIN" you have your proof. My DMV clerk is familar with the SF-97 so that should not be an issue, but don't get upset if they have never seen it before. I know for a fact that being nice to my DMV clerk helped get these trucks registered with minimal paperwork and hassle!

I have had mine registered as both Agricultural, and Historical (current). I used what was stamped on the data plate as the serial #.

As for the tracing, I didnt have to provide one here. I walked in with the SF-97 and GL letter, and walked out with plates. Granted, that was 4 years ago, and I am in a much more rural area than LI.

I went with the historical route and they did ask me for a tracing of it. If I remember right it was 29.00 bucks for a one year registration.I traced the entire number and it took them about an hour to figure out what the heck they were doing.This was at the Medford location in Suffolk County. Welcome on board good to see somebody from the island.

Thanks for the info. I was told by some folks that the Id number on the tag should be broken up into two parts.
1st part is 04 L .....
which is supposed to be the vehicles military lic. plate number, the second part is the last 9 digits and is supposed to be the 9 that I give to the DMV.
I really don't know.

The ID #'s, at least from what I have seen on the AM General Data Plates, are 17 positions. Equal to a modern day VIN, but in 1971 when the truck was built, I bet the last 9 digits would represent VIN #'s then.
???

What do mean, "loaned it"?

What year is the truck?

Was it was ever registered in NY?

My 1973 AM General came with a NJ title. The only trouble I had registering in NY was they couldn't find anything in the the dmv system for it. I had to get it weighed at the the local dump before they would register and title it in NY. I also have it registered historical plates with antique insurance.

So exactly what do you have for ownership beside a "BILL OF SALE" ? previous reg or title ? . Most go with HX insurance and plates , or you have to go the FULL PRICE route . BTW , if you only have a bill of sale , you DO NOT have OWNERSHIP in NYS , you may have a big piece of LAWN ART . Are you sure the person who sold it to you was the actual owner ? Most of the M35's get registered as a pick-up , that's how mine is , a HX pick-up , LOL A little advice to you would be not to DO ANYTHING to your M35 UNTIL you get the ownership straightened out , you could end up with a lot of monies into something that you can't get ownership to . Also in NYS anything 1972 and newer is a TITLE vehicle , older is just a transferable registration , NO $50.00 title fee .

I have a bill of sale... I know the previous owner is legitimate as I service his many MV vehicles including Unimogs and a VW thing as well as other deuces and 5 ton & 10 ton wreckers...

It was registered in NY previously. It is a 65'

The previous owner had it stored at a friend's place who was supposed to fix it but registered it and used it for plowing snow. They then let is sit for a while and supposedly lost the registration.

The fact that it was previously registered leaves you with one route.

You need to get the person who registered it last, get a transferable registration from the dmv(this will take time), then sign it over to the person you bought it from. Then he will need to pay sales tax and register it(insurance too), then he can sign it over to you.

That is the right way to proceed.

You may try anything else, but it may not work out so well for you.

What Doghead says is the RIGHT way to go , putting a BOGUS lien on a vehicle is NOT the way to go , it could jeopardize your father's dealer's license , ask me how I know . It's a lot easier to stay out of trouble then get out of trouble once you get in . If your is father is a NYS dealer he should know how to get a replacement registration , it's no big deal . Last bit of worthless advice I have is try not to give out too much infomation on how you want to circumvent the law on a OPEN FORUM .

I have had good luck with Riverhead in the past. Not sure how open they are lately I think you have to get an appointment. Far from you.

I did my truck at Brookhaven and it was a bit of a struggle but it went thru. They were not sure how to handle the short VIN on the transferable registration. Manager had to figure it out. This truck was already registered in NYS when I got it.

I just registered my M817 dump truck. i did it by mail due to covid. I sent in a Vin pencil trace and the bill of sale from Gov liq from back in 2003. I didnt have a SF97 just a bill of sale. I identified that it was a 1971 based on the info from this forum. I got commercial plates and added i think 20000 for caring capacity. It went though just fine and i have been enjoying driving that puppy.
