M35A2 tranmission rebulds?

Who either can rebuild a M35A2 tranny or has one already rebuild for sale in the NY/NJ/PA/CT area? Something ready to bolt on..


Any idea of a ball park price?

My buddy's M35A2 lost a syncro, and rebuilding xmissions is not our forte.

Its really not that hard. I did a simple rebuild of my 3053a not too long ago and wasnt nearly as hard as I thought it would be. Jatonka's website has the rebuild manual for the trans. and it is pretty thorough and has decent diagrams explaining it. Plus at eriks military surplus dot com, you can get just about everything you need for it and really good prices....just a thought.

Gentlemen,

My understanding of this site, limited as it is, leads me to believe that I am better off resurrecting a thread related to a topic on which I need help rather than starting a new one.

So, SW66 may I ask you a question or two? I would very much like to do a rebuild of my 3053a transmissions, with my mechanic. I would like to do the one in my truck as well as the back up I already own.

To your knowledge has anyone done a documented rebuild, somewhat like Banshee 365 did on his axles in the thread titled "Front Axle Seals & Boots Step x Step"? That thread is exquisitely well done and really lays things out for a girl to understand.

I would be eternally grateful for any guidance in the right direction. :-D

At your advice I did order two of the basic gasket/seal kits from Erik's, however I did not see bearings or major seals. So, I am still chasing parts at the moment before this project begins.

Again, thank you for any help :-D

I dont think anyone has done a step by step tranny rebuild thread. Ive never found one, but that doesnt mean there isnt one buried somewhere here with a misleading heading. I think the TM for the rebuild of a 3053a is in the TMs section here. I think there is a few guys on here who have new or extra parts or can point you in the right direction. I didnt replace much other then the input shaft bearing and the gasket set, so I never looked for sychro's or gears etc. All in all though, it really isnt that difficult to do. Getting it out of the truck is almost harder then tearing it down. Good luck with it[thumbzup]

Talked to some wonderful people at Boyce Equipment this afternoon and they said the same thing as you. Makes me want to get started right away, and they have everything from top to bottom for this project.

Looks like it's going to be about muscling the trannies around

FYI, most of the bearings are std sized & comercially available. So you can shop around a bit before ordering. Just avoid made-in-China bearings; make sure you get US-made Timken; NSK or equivalent!

In the exploded view below, I have added the corresponding bearing numbers.
Usually the cylindrical roller bearing #DD will survive the other ball bearings by far and does not need to be replaced during a first rebuild.

Although the two bearings #B and #R are the same size, #B is built stronger - and also priced higher. You can use #B (remove shield) in place of #R; but you should not use the "light duty" #R in place of #B. Hope this makes sense...

The oil seal for the output shaft is also a std. industrial part - just in case someone thinks it is specific and made of gold... Seal number is #470520 (Timken or equiv.)

Buy the rebuild kit from M35-Tom (I pieced mine together) on SS. Get the synchros from Sam Weiner. Print out the TM and just do it page by page. I never did one before, and that's how I did mine.[thumbzup]

As for wrestling the trannies around, yeah I'm 5'4" 120# so I plan on going some rounds with them roflProbably a bit too much info for the internet as things stand but I'm grateful beyond words sir.

All joking aside, I have a world class mechanic and he will be the one taking the beating for the most part, not me. I do love to get dirty under the hood and sometimes in my enthusiasm I forget how big this machinery really is. I blame 3 years of running a mom & pop repair shop for that! :-D

If the TM everyone is referring to is TM9-2520-246-34-1, then I have it downloaded and will be printing and binding a hard copy this evening. On the other hand if I goofed up and have the wrong one, may I ask for a point in the right direction.

hndronj, I found a Sam Winer Motors on the net, is that the person you were suggesting? I also got the info on 35tom, thank you so much for the help :D

gringeltaube, if I'm lucky enough to be totally involved in the rebuilds, instead of just being parts girl, I'm going to try and get as many step by step photos as I can. Maybe I can make a contribution to someone else the way all you gentlemen have helped me.

That TM is the correct one; along with the -34P, which has the exploded views and part numbers.
Just don't expect the quality of images, of what the old books from fifty years ago used to be...!

A nice step x step write-up, including photos, would be a great contribution, for sure! You will have many supporters, here...

Suggestion for tranny removal.... I used a small electric winch sitting on two flat metal beams laid across from the back of the cab to the front of the cab (roof removed, windshield layed down)...lowered the tranny to the floor. Thats how the TM says to do it, but I dont have the A-frame they show in the book...I improvised lol.

I've done 3 or 4, I just use a cherry picker through the door. Have it as high as possible during removal and as low as possible during install. Very simple to do.

MDG, Fleetpride may have some of the parts you need. I know my local one has the gasket for the inspection plate (in different thicknesses for the PTO) - costs a whopping 47 cents each.:-D
