m35a2c starter issue

well I put voltage right to the starter last night and .......nothing ! the starter didn't bump , turn over or nothing. :( well time to order parts now...... there is a guy here in town that rebuilds starters . I called him told him what I had. he was like I don't think I can get parts like that to do the job.... so on Monday I will be getting a starter.... thanks for all the help on the post from everyone.... will let everyone know what happens.....

Well today didn't do as planned. I had a buddy bring a starter off his MV today and try it in mine .... And nothing. It does the same thing. I'm so lost ! I jumped this starter also and nothing. You can here volts drop when you jump it the air buzzer dies. It's like a voltage drop or something. I know motor isn't locked up it ran great til I parked it. Can these motors vapor lock like others ??? I want to try and pull with tractor next and try and jump start it. I'm getting fustrated my lil man wants to ride so bad and I've got nothing.

Have you actually tried to turn the engine ? Put the transfer-case in neutral and the transmission in 4th gear or 2nd, then turn the driveshaft between the tranny and transfer-case with a bar. Make sure the engine kill is pulled out.

What do you mean by bump the starter?

When I referred to it, I meant crossing the two leads on the starter, the two big lugs. This should cause the starter to spin, but the solenoid will not push it forward to engage the flywheel. It will just spin in place.

So are you saying that you cross the two leads, and the starter does not spin at all?

yes the starter does spin.... i didnt think about the solenoid not pushing duh on my part.... but the solenoid on side of motor is clicking when you hit starter button. i don't want to pull start truck til i turn it by hand. you cant compress water or fuel in cyl it will not end good... when i get home im going to turn motor by hand. im going to try and put voltage to starter and solenoid to see what happens. Still sounds like you have a loose connection between the battery and the starter. I would re-check all connections and follow along the wires to look for damaged sections. If the jacket wears down on the cables, water gets in and corrosion takes care of the rest.

If the batteries are truly "good" and your electrical "browns out" when the starter is tried, you have a bad connection.

Well great news !! The motor turns by hand.  I'm taking all wires off and cleaning up. The batteries have 12.2 and 11.99.

Well that's good news ! Now you need to check that solenoid on the starter. Also like daytonatrbo mentioned, check all the electrical connections especially the ends. Sometimes the connection is good but the wires themselves are corroded at the ends. Try and twist the copper ends to make sure there is a good connection there.

Well guys !!! Great news. It's alive and running great !!!!!! YES !!!! Well taking all the wires and cleaning them with wire brush and fixing will all new batt cables it's up and running !!! Thanks again for all the help !!!! Now back to work on getting it fixed up !!!!

hard cold start issue in SC

SC isn't that cold but ol girl will not start when its cold.......
1- "2" new 1100 cca commercial batt
2- new wolverine tech 24v high output alt
3- all new filters
4- all new wiring and clean frame " pos & neg "

I went threw all the batt problems awhile back and that's all good ......btu when it drops a littile in temp the truck want to start like tttttthhhhhhhiiiiiiissssss very sssssssllllllllooooooowwwwww turn over ..aua
so ?????

block heater???
or what????

any ideas will be helpful thanks:D

Even if its cold should still turn over quickly. MY truck doesnt like cold weather but the engine still turns over quick. Install a block heater and push in the clutch while starting and see if that helps. If not... the starter might be about half dead.


How did my post get here. I think someone merged a couple threads together. My post no longer makes sense because it was added on the fourth page somehow.... Either way good luck...

Are you using your cold start system?

Which one do you have?

You may simply have a bad battery cable. Measure each one.

Also load test your batteries.

Merged with your old thread, since all that info is useful to know here and this seems to be a continuation of that issue.

new " NOS" starter not even 5 months old
"all new" wiring to batteries and alt

truck runs great....when running just doesn't like cold

how can I tell if it already has block heater ?
and if not does anyone know a part # for one to get

I check batteries just now ...... test fine and voltage is good
and " cold start system " ??? not sure what you speak of...please teach

"cold start system" refers to either the flame start (original, old) or the ether start system (retrofit) operated by the toggle switch to the left of the steering wheel on the dash.

Oil viscosity is also important. 15W40 turns into molasses once temps drop below freezing. Takes quite a bit of oomph to move that stuff.

yes you are right that oil is like Vermont maple blend ....lol
but crap I forgot all about the toggle switch ..... I do have that on my truck
I guess that helps it start ... ive never had to use before never had it running to much in cold weather.... last year it was all the **** batt cables holding me back

well.......it was the new batt I installed this time last year. found one had dead cell and other just went to crap had to load test over night to find iss. I got new ones from napa under warranty..... but now I have a solar batt tender on them to keep them up....
