I was getting ready to leave for my Peoria IL trip this morning and heard a BOOM! The fan killed the radiator!

There is a 1/4" air line that comes in the top of the shroud and is held by an Adel clamp on a bracket. The fan blades hit that clamp and broke.

I will post pics...

Yup

I thought the same thing. At least here I have a full shop to take care of the drama. I had the rad out in about 2 hours. My rad guy will have it repaired by noon tomorrow. My critical path is the fan. I am going to check with Cat tomorrow and see if there is on in Houston.

I "may" be on the road tomorrow night to keep with the original schedule. Only time will tell.

DANG, Justin!
At least it happened pre-departure and you are in a good location for "intensive care".
Wishing you Best of Fortune with the repairs and ultimately the trip....

Bruce et all...

Thanks for the info.

The bracket only has one mounting hole! I have not fully investigated this but I assume the bracket was able to pivot into the path of the fan. Perhaps two holes will prevent this. I don't know yet... gotta look at it closer this weekend.

repair

Thanks. That is exactly how it is being repaired today. The core is brass and easy to work with.

I'm sure the A3 uses a different radiator than the A2, but does it use the same or simular bottom mounting system? (the 2 bolts through rubber gromets) Had a simular problem when the bottom of the radiator sheetmetal rusted out around the bolts releaseing them through the bottom. Then with road vibration the radiator slid back into the fan with rather bad results! Needless to say the A2's steel fan bored a hole through the radiator!!!

My point...... check all the mountings.....
