m35A3 Transfer case

I have looked for the p/n for the A3 transfer case with out much luck.
Is the A3 Transfer case the same as the A2?

I know this sound like a newbie question!! New to A3's

if it is not in neutral and the engine is running I would amagine it would be hard to shift with a load on it .

Thanks, I read that before and it does not say much about shifting the transfer case.
I try not to ask questions. But sometime I can not find it in the TM or do not understand what they are saying, that is why I ask a question.
I know a lot of people here just post a question with out looking in the TM.

I agree the manual is vague and I understand the reason for the question now that I think about it.

You could try the shift High to Low or Low to High while stationary and use neutral in the transmission and if it shifts fine then you have a good place to start.

I would think that you would want a low amount of "energy" transferring between the engine/transmission and the transfer case to have a smooth shift. If the transmission is in drive, the output shaft will spin if the resistance is eliminated from it by engaging neutral in the transfer case. The standard transmission deuces recommend depressing the clutch and then shifting the transfer case. Leaving the transmission in gear prevents it from freeewheeling during the shift and possibly grinding the gears of the transfer case.

My suggestion would be to not shift into low range unless you are going slow (Obvious I know), and also I would put the transmission in neutral and make the shift smoothly but fairly quickly into the lower, or higher range. Then re-engage the transmission.

You will find out quickly what the setup likes and does not like, and then you can share your knowledge with others with the same question.

The transfer case on my A3 is hard to shift as well. I found it shifts the easiest if you are stopped on a slight incline. I put the transmissiion in neutral and let the truck roll back a few inches while I shift the transfer case. It works much easier that way. I tried shifting it while driving slow and I couldn't shift it without really leaning on the lever, which I don't think is good. The transfer case appears to shift into low range easier than back into high range, for whatever reason. It never grinds gears, however. I agree, the TM is lacking in that area.

The transfer case in my A2 is very easy to shift at all speeds.

When you are driving an automatic truck, and shift a transfer case or auxillary transmission, you need to back off the fuel just as you make the shift to unload the torque from the drive train. you will get used to it. Used to have an International tandem dump with an Allison MT-41 and a 3 speed spicer auxillary trans, it took a minute to figure that one out. Turned out to be a lousy truck, but the 2 transmissions were OK. JT out

Try double clutching the transfer and try and shift back to low just before the trucks comes to a stop and still rolling when at light/stop sign.

m35a3 wont shift

Just got my M35A3 a few weeks ago and just tried the low range. It wont shift into low range at all. It just feels like something is bending. Does the front axle have to be engaged? Im sure the douche that had it before me never even tried it as much as he lied about everything else. I got it on ebay and all i could do is go by his word.

It does NOT have to have the front axel engaged; mine feels really stiff if I'm in drive. What works for me is to have the transmission in neutral and be just barely rolling along and then jockey the lever into high or low. It will not go when in drive. (Or at least I don't want to push that hard.)

I get mine rolling about 5mph put in neutral and try to get shifted in low before it stops rolling . Mine will go if I an stoped and in N , but it takes less force if I am rolling .
Having the front axle engaged would just add more drag and binding in the drivetrain making it harder to shift .
