M48/60 ERA Original Primer

Hey everyone,
I have a buddy that was contracted to restore an old M48A3 for a private owner. The customer wants to stay as true to form as possible, so I offered to help him find the proper paint schemes and colors. He even wants the original primer color. The schemes and colors have been easy to find, any good modelling site will get you that, but I am having a **** of a time trying to find the original primer color. Can anybody help me out?

my guess is red oxide that was on my m-37 and also under 20 layers of alkyd enamel on my duce in korea

That was my first response too, but I know that red oxide was tied to WWII and I wasn't sure how far after that practice continued.
