Back in the day we called those rods "idiot sticks" since it helped novice drivers know where the edge of the bumper was. I have seen the copper plated ground rods from generators used since they had threaded ends and could be held on by a nut. Often a guidon (flag with distinctive unit insignia) was flown from the rods when going down the road in a non-tactical environment.
