If you want to defeat the sprag, place an air valve on the line from the compressor to the sprag. Then the front end will free wheel, and you should gain some miles per gallon. Do make sure the sprag is in neutral before cutting the air supply.
Where is netrual on a sprag 809 series? Put it in reverse and it's in reverse sprag. Take it out of reverse and it's in forward sprag. Ever had the air cylinder apart to check that?

As for the axle wonder if something in the chunk went bad. Would seem if a wheel bearing went bad it would lock the hub to the spindle.
